The 2012 Barolo Le Vigne, here in a library release, is still a very young wine. Bright acids lift a core of red fruit in a Barolo that impresses with its vibrancy. Spice, blood orange, mint, rose petal and lavender open with a bit of time in the glass. The 2012 showed quite a bit of potential as a young wine, now, that potential is really starting to come through. This is a terrific showing.

Purity of fruit and balance here is very impressive. Firm and very silky tannins with a long, long finish that gives the wine amazing depth and intensity. Love the spicy and dense fruit character at the end of the palate.

Vineyard Cultivation

The 2012 Le Vigne comes from a vintage that presented moderate ripening conditions across Piedmont, with a later harvest than the warm 2007. Barolo's marl and limestone soils were well-suited to capturing finesse and balance in a vintage that demanded careful fruit selection. The 2012 growing season featured a cool, extended spring followed by steady summer warmth, resulting in grapes with good phenolic maturity but retaining natural acidity. The extended ripening period favoured complexity over concentration, producing wines of structure and ageing potential.

Vinification

Hand-harvested grapes were fully destemmed, fermented in controlled-temperature vats using natural yeasts with a maceration period of 18–22 days to extract colour and tannin without overextraction. Malolactic conversion progressed naturally in neutral vessels before the wine was transferred to used French oak and larger barrels for approximately 26–30 months of slow élevage. Bottling occurred after natural settling, preserving the wine's textural complexity and structure.

Piedmont

Piedmont (Piemonte in Italian) is probably the finest wine region in all of Italy, and has laid claim to this since Roman times. It has a continental climate influenced by the surrounding Alps and Ligurian Apennines, and is located in the north-west of Italy, bordering both France and Switzerland.

Piedmont has only 1% of the total vineyards of Bordeaux and 15% that of Burgundy. So while a top Chateaux may produce upwards of 35,000 cases a year, leading Barolo producers will often make only 800 cases. More than half of its vineyards are registered with DOC designations and many are in the Apennine or Alpine foothills, from 300-600m above sea level. Most of the wines are produced by smaller family estates rather than larger holdings.

Piedmont has 46 different DOC and four DOCG regions, and produces the largest number of well known, world-recognized, prize-winning wines. The most famous would have to be Barolo or Barbaresco, whose power comes from the Nebbiolo grape variety. The most widely planted red variety is Barbera although Dolcetto, Muscat, Shiraz and Bonarda are also produced.

The white variety most well known is Moscato, which is often made into frizzante (bubbly) wines known as Asti. Cortese is made into the popular Gavi wines, and smaller amounts of Chardonnay and high quality Sparkling are also produced in the far north of Piedmont.
