One of my personal favorites, the 2018 Barolo Le Vigne is savory in character and packed with dark fruit. Ripe cherry and redcurrant cedes to spice, licorice and fragrant rose. The oak is integrated, but there are added accents of spice and dark tar. Le Vigne is a blend of fruit from Baudana in Serralunga d'Alba, Villero in Castiglione Falletto, Vignane in Barolo and Merli in Novello.

The delicate mix of creamy red berries and savory, truffley notes keeps your nose glued to the glass. And that subtlety is carried over into the medium-to full-bodied palate, where there’s a youthful balance of silky fruit and lightly firm tannins that drives gently through the long finish. Subtle is the word, but excellent is the verdict. So tempting to drink now, but give it a couple of years.

Vineyard Cultivation

The 2018 growing season in Piedmont was moderate, with a cool spring followed by steady summer warmth and a balanced autumn. Barolo's marl and limestone soils expressed characteristic minerality in a vintage that did not favour extreme ripeness. The extended ripening period allowed grapes to achieve full phenolic maturity while retaining natural acidity, producing wines with structure and ageing potential. Sandrone's fruit selection reflected a commitment to balance and terroir expression over concentration.

Vinification

Hand-harvested grapes were destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled vats using native yeasts, with maceration lasting approximately 19–23 days to achieve balanced extraction. Malolactic fermentation occurred naturally in a combination of used barrels and larger oak vessels, where the wine spent approximately 27–31 months. The slower élevage preserved aromatic complexity and mineral character appropriate to a balanced vintage. Bottling followed natural settling, maintaining textural integrity.

About this Wine

Piedmont

Piedmont (Piemonte in Italian) is probably the finest wine region in all of Italy, and has laid claim to this since Roman times. It has a continental climate influenced by the surrounding Alps and Ligurian Apennines, and is located in the north-west of Italy, bordering both France and Switzerland.

Piedmont has only 1% of the total vineyards of Bordeaux and 15% that of Burgundy. So while a top Chateaux may produce upwards of 35,000 cases a year, leading Barolo producers will often make only 800 cases. More than half of its vineyards are registered with DOC designations and many are in the Apennine or Alpine foothills, from 300-600m above sea level. Most of the wines are produced by smaller family estates rather than larger holdings.

Piedmont has 46 different DOC and four DOCG regions, and produces the largest number of well known, world-recognized, prize-winning wines. The most famous would have to be Barolo or Barbaresco, whose power comes from the Nebbiolo grape variety. The most widely planted red variety is Barbera although Dolcetto, Muscat, Shiraz and Bonarda are also produced.

The white variety most well known is Moscato, which is often made into frizzante (bubbly) wines known as Asti. Cortese is made into the popular Gavi wines, and smaller amounts of Chardonnay and high quality Sparkling are also produced in the far north of Piedmont.
