Tasting Notes

Their families were farmers for many generations, like many other families in the Langhe. In 1992, Mauro began to drastically reduce the number of grapes per hectare and started to vinify on his own in his new cantina. He utilized shorter macerations with temperature controlled rotary-fermenters and aging in small oak barrels, and he started to produce, little by little, wines that were more elegant with higher quality grapes.

Critic Scores

French oak, blue flower, underbrush and wild berry aromas escape the glass. On the smooth, full-bodied palate, firm fine-grained tannins frame juicy black cherry, crushed raspberry, espresso and star anise. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Drink 2024-2034. Kerin O'Keefe

Vineyard Cultivation

Mauro Veglio, a traditional Barolo producer based in Monforte d'Alba, farms vineyard sites around the Castelletto cru, one of Barolo's renowned microclimates on the region's southern-facing slopes. The 2014 growing season presented moderate conditions after the warmer 2013; summer ripening was steady, allowing Nebbiolo to develop its characteristic tannic structure and floral aromatics. The calcareous, clayey soils of Castelletto impart elegance and minerality to the wine. The estate maintains old-vine parcels and practises traditional Piedmont viticulture, with selective harvesting to ensure only ripe, healthy fruit reaches the winery.

Vinification

Mauro Veglio adheres to classical Barolo methods. Nebbiolo grapes were hand-harvested and destemmed before fermentation in temperature-controlled wooden vats, a hallmark of serious Barolo producers. The wine underwent a lengthy maceration to extract tannins and colour while preserving the variety's subtle aromatics. Following fermentation, the wine was transferred to large wooden barrels for an extended 12–18 month élevage, allowing oxidative refinement and integration. The 2014 release reflects the vintage's balanced phenolics and good structure.
