Tasting Notes

Maxwell Minotaur Shiraz 2006 is a powerful and polished expression of premium McLaren Vale Shiraz from one of South Australia’s most respected wine families. Established in 1979, Maxwell Wines has become a McLaren Vale icon, with the Lloyd family renowned for championing the region’s rich, full-bodied red wines.

As a flagship cuvée, Minotaur showcases the intensity and depth associated with McLaren Vale’s distinctive ancient soils. The 2006 vintage offers generous layers of blackberry, ripe plum, dark chocolate and warm spice, framed by velvety tannins, impressive structure and a long, refined finish.

Rich, complex and cellar-worthy, this distinguished Australian Shiraz is an excellent match for grilled steak, slow-cooked beef, roast lamb and other richly flavoured dishes. Sourced from a premium private cellar, Maxwell Minotaur Shiraz 2006 is a compelling addition to any collection of fine Australian red wine.

Critic Scores

A super wine that speaks so much of McLaren Vale. Loaded with masses of opulent dark Shiraz fruits revealing syrupy dark chocolate, ripe plum and a little liqueur black cherry. The flavour profile is dense and concentrated with lashings of opulent super saturated fruit flavours washing through. The use of French oak has added another level of complexity and structure to a wine that offers so much either now or over an extended period.

The piece de resistance is the 2005 “Minotaur” Shiraz, a glass-coating purple/black colored behemoth. It offers a brooding perfume of wood smoke, truffle, violets, blackberry, and blueberry. This leads to a thick, opulent, mouth-filling, spicy wine that is an infant developmentally. Very intense, structured, and long, it demands 8-10 years of additional cellaring. This hedonistic effort should drink well through 2035.

About this Wine

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
