Extremely perfumed and crystal-clear with violets, plums, raspberries, walnuts and black olives. It’s medium-to full-bodied with very fine tannins that are extremely polished and refined. The length is long and very precise. Chocolate and hazelnuts. This is the 25th anniversary of this fine merlot and sangiovese. Hard not to drink now, but better after 2022.

Siepi, Fonterutoli’s Merlot/Sangiovese blend, is absolutely gorgeous in 2018. Rich, pliant and creamy, Siepi offers all of the seductiveness of Merlot with the bright acids and grip of Sangiovese. Inky blue/purplish fruit, lavender, dried herbs, spice, licorice and new leather meld together in an open-knit, inviting Tuscan red with no hard edges and tons of allure shaped by alberese soils with a good bit of clay. The 2018 is an undeniably sexy wine with so much immediacy.

I tasted this wine in a preview capacity a few months back and am coming back now with a final review. The lovely 2018 Siepi, from old vines of Sangiovese and Merlot, comes out roaring. I have long been a fan of this historic wine that so carefully blends the fruity freshness and bright flavors of the Tuscan grape with the soft and succulent background tones of the French counterpart. These two sides achieve elegance and balance in this classic vintage. To the palate, the wine is fleshed out and texturally rich. I'm happily settling on the higher part of the range of scores I had previously published. The wine has come together in seamless fashion with that extra bottle aging.

There is a sweetness here that is enveloping and seductive with baked earth undertones set against raspberry, plum, black cherry and sandalwood. Soft and caressing tannins, where the grace and aromatic power of Sangiovese is given a satiny texture and enveloping mouthfeel by the Merlot. A brilliant wine that has an identity and a sense of place. First vintage 1992. Located in Chianti Classico, the estate has a 600ha forest that practices sustainable agro-forestry and is more than carbon neutral, in fact having a positive carbon balance where the estate absorbs five times as much CO2 as it emits. 70% new oak.

Vineyard Cultivation

Mazzei is a Tuscan producer of long standing, operating multiple estates including holdings in the Chianti Classico and Toscana IGT zones. Siepi is a signature Merlot-based blend from the estate's premium range. The 2018 vintage occurred during a warm, dry year in Tuscany, with excellent conditions for ripening international varieties alongside Sangiovese. The vineyard soils of central Tuscany—clay and limestone on hillside sites—provide structure and elegance to Merlot-led blends. Mazzei maintains organic or biodynamic practices on key parcels, reflecting a commitment to sustainable viticulture.

Vinification

Merlot fruit was hand-harvested and underwent traditional fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks to preserve fruit character. Maceration duration was managed to extract colour and soft tannins appropriate for a Merlot blend. The wine was aged in French oak barrels, allowing integration of subtle wood notes with the primary fruit. The final blend incorporated Merlot as the primary component with secondary Cabernet or other Tuscan varieties, a house style typical of Mazzei's premium IGT offerings. The 2018 release reflects the vintage's ripe, well-balanced profile.

About this Wine

Tuscany

Tuscany is the oldest wine region in Italy, with a long history dating back over 2700 years. The region is on the Western coast of Italy, stretching from the coastline of the Tyrrhenian Sea all the way to the Apennine mountains, with the majority of the region being quite hilly.

Contributing to around 6% of Italy's total wine output, Tuscany is the third most planted region, but only the eight biggest producer. Much of this can be attributed to the hilly terroir and poor soils leading to lower yields, but generally higher quality wines. The region produces far more red than white wine, and is responsible for two of the most famous Italian red wines, Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino.

Chianti was first classified in 1716, and the region of Tuscany now has 29 DOC and 7 DOCG classifications. In the 1970s 'Super Tuscan' wines emerged of supreme quality, commanding very high prices. Although they were initially produced outside the DOC or DOCG zones, most of the regions have since been classified, though some producers still opt to use the simpler and less restrictive IGT labelling.

The famous red wine Chianti is based on the the Sangiovese variety, though is most commonly blended with Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon. The blending of multiple grapes is common, even Bordeaux blends can be found. White wines produced include Vermentino, Vernaccia, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay.
