Metaxa 12 Star is the premium expression in the Metaxa star range, produced at the Kifissia distillery in Athens from white wine distillates aged for a minimum of twelve years in French Limousin oak — the extended maturation producing greater richness, dried fruit complexity, and integrated oak influence compared to the 7 Star. After ageing, the distillates are blended with barrel-matured Muscat wine from the Aegean islands of Samos and Limnos, then finished with the proprietary botanical blend of infused rose petals and Mediterranean herbs unique to Metaxa. The 12 Star's extended maturation delivers a significantly more concentrated and complex expression with deeper dried fruit, spice, and floral character. Bottled at 40% ABV.

Metaxa was created in 1888 by Spyros Metaxa, a Greek merchant and traveller who sought to create a unique Greek spirit drawing on the country's winemaking heritage. The first Metaxa facility opened in Piraeus in 1888; by the late 1960s, a modern distillery was established in Kifissia, a suburb of Athens, where Metaxa is produced today. Metaxa is a uniquely Greek spirit: a blend of aged brandy distillates and Muscat wine from the Aegean islands of Samos and Limnos, to which a proprietary botanical blend including rose petals and Mediterranean herbs is added. The star rating on each expression corresponds to the minimum years of ageing for the blend.
