Tasting Notes

Michel Couvreur is the premier Whisky Bottling & Blending house of France, located in the hills of Burgundy where the original founder dug out his famous underground cask cellars decades ago.

With a reputation for producing deeply complex, unfiltered whiskies aged in the highest quality Sherry & Wine casks, Michel Couvreur's spirits are trusted and adored around the world for the bold characteristics they display.

Whereas the majority of the whisky aging in the Couvreur cellars are Single Malts from Scotland, the Hexanobile is a Blended Malt tapped from another country's burgeoning whisky industry.

This new expression is a blend of 3 French Single Malts, aged in a full spectrum of sherry casks. 10 Barrels, split between Fino, Amontillado, Oloroso and Pedro Ximinez. The spirit itself is split between 2013 and 2017 vintages, maintaining a balance of aged and youthful notes.

Appearance
The Hexanobile French Blended Malt 2026 Edition shows an intense amber hue, reflecting its aging in sherry casks and carefully managed maturation.

Nose
The nose reveals a spicy character alongside notes of dried flowers and sherry, offering a powerful, highly aromatic expression.

Palate
On the palate, this blended malt is smooth and spicy, delivering a round, silky texture. The bright finish unveils aromas of coffee beans and roasted notes.

Distillation

Michel Couvreur Hexanobile is an 8-year-old French blended malt whisky, matured at the Couvreur cellars in Bouze-lès-Beaune, Burgundy, in a selection of PX (Pedro Ximénez), Amontillado, and Oloroso sherry casks, with a small proportion of peated spirit providing a restrained undercurrent of smoke. The blend is assembled to achieve balance, harmony, and high aromatic concentration — rich and expressive, yet delicate. The distillates are sourced as new-make malt spirit from Scotland before extended maturation in the Burgundian cellars. Produced without artificial colour or chill-filtration in approximately 500 bottles per batch. Bottled at 46% ABV.

Provenance

Michel Couvreur was a Belgian entrepreneur and whisky enthusiast who established a whisky maturation operation in Bouze-lès-Beaune in Burgundy, France, after sourcing new-make spirit from Scotland and recognising that the deep cellars of Burgundy offered unique conditions for whisky ageing. Working with traditional Burgundian stone vaulted cellars and an extensive collection of unusual casks — including rare sherry butts and wine barrels — Michel Couvreur developed a house style of highly aromatic, sherry-forward whisky unlike anything produced within the Scottish tradition. The brand continues under the stewardship of his protégés and produces a range of blended malts and single malts from Burgundy.
