Tasting Notes

Michel Couvreur is the premier Whisky Bottling & Blending house of France, located in the hills of Burgundy where the original founder dug out his famous underground cask cellars decades ago.

With a reputation for producing deeply complex, unfiltered whiskies aged in the highest quality Sherry & Wine casks, Michel Couvreur's spirits are trusted and adored around the world for the bold characteristics they display.

Upper Cap Edition 2026 is part of Michel Couvreur’s Les Raretés collection. This cuvée represents an enhanced version of Cap a Pie, demonstrating that a blended Scotch whisky can achieve great complexity. Composed primarily of grain whisky distilled in 2007 and aged in very old Pedro Ximénez casks, this blend is elevated by old, lightly peated malts distilled in 2010.

Fifteen years of aging and a touch of peat awaken remarkable tertiary aromas. Bottled in February 2026 at 47% vol. after minimal reduction, this whisky retains all its concentration, richness, and persistence. This limited edition is especially sought after by enthusiasts.

Distillation & Provenance

Crafted only for our premium spirits

Distillation

Michel Couvreur Upper Cap is an annual release blended whisky from the Couvreur cellar in Bouze-lès-Beaune, Burgundy — each year's release drawing on the house's maturing reserves of Scottish malt spirit to produce a distinct bottling reflecting the current state of the cellar's cask stock. The 2026 release continues the Upper Cap series tradition of assembling selected sherry-cask-matured parcels into a blended whisky that demonstrates the richness and aromatic concentration characteristic of Couvreur's Burgundian maturation approach. Produced without artificial colour or chill-filtration, each bottle hand-finished at the Bouze-lès-Beaune cellar. Bottled at 47% ABV.

Provenance

Michel Couvreur was a Belgian entrepreneur and whisky enthusiast who established a whisky maturation operation in Bouze-lès-Beaune in Burgundy, France, after sourcing new-make spirit from Scotland and recognising that the deep cellars of Burgundy offered unique conditions for whisky ageing. Working with traditional Burgundian stone vaulted cellars and an extensive collection of unusual casks — including rare sherry butts and wine barrels — Michel Couvreur developed a house style of highly aromatic, sherry-forward whisky unlike anything produced within the Scottish tradition. The brand continues under the stewardship of his protégés and produces a range of blended malts and single malts from Burgundy.

About this Spirits

Burgundy

Burgundy is undoubtedly the home of the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnays in the world, where vineyards, or Domaines have been producing wines for over 2000 years. Burgundy is located in the North-east of France, an hours drive from Lyon and 2 hours from Paris. With over 100 appellations, or sub-regions (more than any other wine region) Burgundy is known for being the most terroir-oriented region in the World. The finest red wines of Burgundy are found in the Côte d'Or, a string of villages including Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey St Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-St Georges.

There are flavours present in great Burgundys that are the envy of Pinot Noir producers worldwide. The elusive peacocks tail finish that goes on and on, and the pretty-elegance backed by Burgundy muscle is the goal of winemakers around the globe. The main levels in the Burgundy classifications, in descending order of quality, are: Grand crus, Premier crus, village appellations, and finally regional appellations. For the Chablis wines, a similar hierarchy of Grand Cru, Premier Cru and Village wines is used, plus Petit Chablis as a level below Village Chablis.
