Moko Hills 'Estate' Central Otago Chardonnay 2023
Moko Hills 'Estate' Central Otago Chardonnay 2023
Tasting Notes
Grown on the highest-altitude block of the estate (sitting in a dramatic, sun-trapping natural amphitheatre 350 meters above sea level), the Moko Hills Chardonnay 2023 is a striking, textural masterpiece. Co-creators Donald van der Westhuizen and Claire Mulholland capitalized on a warm, dry La Niña season that yielded incredibly small berries with concentrated, intense flavors. Utilizing a high-caliber clone mix (UCD15, 548, and B95), the fruit was whole-bunch pressed with full solids directly into French oak puncheons (only 10% new) and wild-fermented. Allowed to undergo natural malolactic fermentation with occasional lees stirring, it spent 12 months in barrel before being bottled completely unfined and unfiltered. This is an extraordinarily delicious, "new-wave" New Zealand white that trades heavily pushed, oaky blockbusters for pure vineyard expression, lithe tension, and captivating complexity.
