The ultimate brain trust of Central Otago—expert viticultural consultant Donald van der Westhuizen and iconic winemaker Claire Mulholland (of Burn Cottage and Amisfield fame)—combine forces to meticulously selection only the finest estate barrels for this flagship bottling

Born from a exceptionally warm, dry La Niña season that naturally restricted soil moisture, the vines produced small, compact bunches that delivered massive fruit depth, natural structural density, and remarkable tannin complexity.

It features a deeply layered tapestry of dark plums, boysenberry, and baked raspberry, beautifully woven with elements of dried herbs, dark violets, and a subtle olive-like savouriness. It is silky, deeply textural, and carries a vibrant, persistent finish.

Tasting Notes

Stepping up from the vibrant, early-drinking style of the 'Kakano', the flagship Moko Hills ‘Estate’ Pinot Noir 2023 represents a deeper, highly curated barrel-selection of the property’s best fruit. Sourced from the warm, sun-drenched slopes of Bendigo, the 2023 vintage thrived during a hot, dry La Niña cycle that created tiny, intensely concentrated berries. Crafted under the collaborative genius of master viticulturist Donald van der Westhuizen and winemaking royalty Claire Mulholland, the fruit (a mix of 777, 115, Abel, and UCD5 clones) was carefully fermented with a partial whole-bunch component to build structural integrity. It was then aged for 12 months in 100% old French oak and bottled completely unfined and unfiltered. This is a bold, beautifully textured, and wonderfully complex Central Otago Pinot Noir that balances immediate deliciousness with incredible aging potential.

Critic Scores

A little closed at the start but with a bit of air quite beautiful, complex aromatics emerge. Intense damson plum, black cherry, raspberry, lots of exotic spices, dusty earth, graphite and garrigue notes. Good fruit concentration and minerality, and silky, structured, firm tannins. Tight at this early stage, but good length. An exciting new producer to watch.

Barrel selections that represent Moko Hill, dark fruit, and fragranced with herbaceous and floral notes, silken tannin structure upholds power and elegance to an enticing, broody closing. 95pts

From Bendigo, a mere 1,600-bottle production. Goji berries open the aromatic profile, then plunge deep into an amaro, herbal-like dimension, where bitter cocoa and grained pink pepper happily co-exist. It’s an “interesting cat”: it softly meows, yet simultaneously scratches you with its sharp, linear tannins. If you love cats as I do, you’ll get my analogy here. Nevertheless, the palate is quite something, between unmistakable structure and vibrant, coiled acidity that pushes a length rich in well-delineated, yet not obvious, fruit. Central Otago through and through.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Moko Hills is a boutique Central Otago venture at Bendigo, where free-draining, schist-derived soils and a dry, semi-continental climate suit Pinot Noir. Viticultural consultant Donald van der Westhuizen oversees the vineyard, and winemaker Claire Mulholland (of Burn Cottage and Amisfield) selects the finest estate barrels for this flagship Estate bottling. The 2023 vintage came from a notably warm, dry La Nina season that naturally restricted soil moisture; vines carried small, compact bunches that delivered depth of fruit, structural density and complex tannin. Farming is meticulous and site-focused, and the wine is assembled as a selection of the strongest parcels rather than to a fixed formula each year.

Vinification

Fruit was hand-harvested and sorted, then fermented with indigenous yeasts in the small-batch, cool-climate manner favoured by Claire Mulholland, with whole-bunch inclusion adding spice and structural detail. Malolactic fermentation is completed in barrel and elevage runs in French oak, a portion of it new, before the final Estate cuvee is chosen as a selection of the best barrels from the site. Production is tiny, reportedly around 1,600 bottles. Exact whole-bunch percentage, new-oak proportion and time in barrel for this release are not published (NEEDS VERIFICATION), so figures are described in general terms rather than stated.

About this Wine

Pinot Noir

A thin-skinned red grape known for its light body, red fruit character, and sensitivity to terroir, grown around the world.

Central Otago

Central Otago is the southernmost wine growing region in the world, located at a latitude of 45 degrees south, on New Zealand’s south island. A spectacular landscape makes the region one of the most scenic wine regions if not in the world then certainly in New Zealand. Central to the region is the tourist destination of Queenstown, which is a great base to make wine trips from.

Heavy mineral deposits in silt loams are typical for the soils in Central Otago, but is unlike any other region in New Zealand. The Otago region is the countries only ‘continental ’ wine growing region.

Pinot Noir is the flagship red varietal, which is very well suited to the regions large diurnal shifts (a large diurnal shift means a big difference between low and high temperatures) and also the regions long, cool and dry autumn. The Pinot Noirs coming out of the Otago region are most often fragrant, lush Pinot Noirs with silky textures and true fruit intensity.

Aromatic whites also thrive, in particular Riesling where anything from bone-dry to very sweet can be made. Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and lesser amounts of Chardonnay is also made to a very high quality. Central Otago is in Jancis Robinson’s top five New World wine producing regions.
