Tasting Notes

Montevertine Le Pergole Torte 2009 is a masterful representation of 100% Sangiovese from one of Tuscany’s most esteemed private cellars. Rooted in a tradition of artisanal craftsmanship dating back to the 1970s, this wine exemplifies the rich heritage and unique terroir of the Chianti region—though since 1982, Montevertine wines have proudly been made independent of the Chianti Classico Consortium.

This vintage is renowned for its extraordinary balance and elegance. On the nose, it opens with vibrant aromas of red cherry and wild berries, layered delicately with subtle spice and earthy undertones. The palate reveals a refined structure where bright acidity meets silky tannins, culminating in a long, lingering finish that reflects the finesse and complexity that only meticulously cultivated Sangiovese grapes can offer.

The 2009 vintage stands out due to optimal climatic conditions in Tuscany that year, producing grapes with perfect ripeness and concentrated flavor profiles. This enhances the depth and intensity of the wine, making it a prized expression of Montevertine’s commitment to quality and authenticity.

Adding to its allure, each bottle features unique artwork depicting a beautiful lady, symbolizing the fusion of tradition and artistic expression that defines Montevertine. This label not only marks the wine’s identity but also its legacy as a collectible treasure.

Produced with exceptional care, Le Pergole Torte 2009 pairs elegantly with classic Italian dishes such as rich pasta, grilled meats, and aged cheeses, showcasing the versatility and sophistication of Tuscan Sangiovese. It is a distinguished choice for those who appreciate wines with depth, character, and historic significance.

Experience the timeless elegance and refined character of Montevertine Le Pergole Torte 2009, a true gem that captures the essence of Tuscany’s winemaking tradition.

Critic Scores

This vintage is very similar to the 2007 edition in terms of intensity, fullness and suppleness. The 2009 Le Pergole Torte shows velvety rich and dark extraction with softly intense aromas of black cherry, spice and grilled rosemary. There's a piquant touch of cheese rind or creamy white chocolate hidden deep somewhere at the back. All of these aromatic elements build in momentum and power to bring the wine a big notch forward in terms of complexity and personality. This is one of the most distinctive wines made in Tuscany, and those singular Montevertine attributes are proudly on display here.

This iconic 100% Sangiovese spends a year in Slavonian oak botte followed by an additional year in 1-year-old barriques. At 10 years old, the 2009 reveals the wild side of Sangiovese yet remains polished. It's a tangle of smoke, dried Mediterranean herbs, tobacco and pot pourri. Smooth and silky but sneaky tannins build and will continue to carry the wine...

The 2009 Le Pergole Torte is young, primary and fruit-driven. This is another wine that is hard to taste in this setting, as the flavors are so primary. Sweet red cherry, pomegranate and spices are all pushed forward. Succulent, layered and beautifully expressive, the 2009 is likely to open up sooner than most Pergole Tortes, although another few years will help the tannin soften. In some ways, the 2009 is a less plush and exotic version of the 2007. Next to the other warm vintages (2003, 2007 and 2011), the 2009 is lighter and more mid-weight in structure.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Montevertine, the historic Chianti Classico estate in Radda in Chianti managed by the Manetti family, cultivates only traditional Chianti varietals—Sangiovese, Canaiolo, and Colorino—reflecting centuries of regional practice. The Le Pergole Torte vineyard occupies prime south-facing slopes within Chianti Classico's heartland, with soils rich in shale, limestone, and iron, providing excellent drainage and mineral character. The 2009 vintage was characterized by warm, dry conditions ideal for Sangiovese ripeness, with measured rainfall allowing stress that concentrated phenolic development. The vineyard practises labour-intensive traditional viticulture, with manual canopy management and selective harvesting. The house's philosophy emphasizes simplicity, respect for terroir, and meticulous attention to detail—principles that govern every aspect of cultivation.

Vinification

The 2009 Le Pergole Torte grapes underwent gentle destemming and fermentation using indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled conditions. Traditional Tuscan fermentation practices included extended maceration on skins to extract deep colour, tannin, and aromatic complexity—hallmark Sangiovese character with cherry, violet, and earthy notes. Post-fermentation, the wine completed malolactic fermentation to develop secondary flavours and texture. The wine aged in large wooden vessels (botte) for approximately 24 months, allowing gradual evolution whilst preserving primary varietal character. The 2009 vintage has now aged 15+ years in bottle, during which it has developed secondary complexity, softer tannins, and evolved aromatics characteristic of mature Chianti Classico.

About this Wine

Tuscany

Tuscany is the oldest wine region in Italy, with a long history dating back over 2700 years. The region is on the Western coast of Italy, stretching from the coastline of the Tyrrhenian Sea all the way to the Apennine mountains, with the majority of the region being quite hilly.

Contributing to around 6% of Italy's total wine output, Tuscany is the third most planted region, but only the eight biggest producer. Much of this can be attributed to the hilly terroir and poor soils leading to lower yields, but generally higher quality wines. The region produces far more red than white wine, and is responsible for two of the most famous Italian red wines, Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino.

Chianti was first classified in 1716, and the region of Tuscany now has 29 DOC and 7 DOCG classifications. In the 1970s 'Super Tuscan' wines emerged of supreme quality, commanding very high prices. Although they were initially produced outside the DOC or DOCG zones, most of the regions have since been classified, though some producers still opt to use the simpler and less restrictive IGT labelling.

The famous red wine Chianti is based on the the Sangiovese variety, though is most commonly blended with Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon. The blending of multiple grapes is common, even Bordeaux blends can be found. White wines produced include Vermentino, Vernaccia, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay.
