Tasting Notes

This is a rum that starts in sepia tones - like flipping through old postcards from Barbados, edges curled, ink faded by salt air. In the glass, it shimmers pale gold, the colour of lazy sunlight on a worn wooden dock. The nose is delicate, unhurried - ripe banana and canned pineapple at first, then soft vanilla bean and brown sugar with just the faintest breath of toasted oak. There's something fleeting about it, like a memory you're not quite sure is yours.

The palate is light-bodied, easygoing, but not without texture. It washes over you like warm tidewater, sweet at first - molasses diluted with orange zest and a wink of nutmeg. There's a mid-palate snap of white pepper and citrus peel that vanishes just as quickly as it arrives, leaving behind a trail of grilled plantain and baking spices. No hidden chambers here, no smouldering tension - just a good-natured narrative that doesn't ask too much of you.

Its finish is short, but not dismissive. A final flutter of oak, banana skin, and a bit of salted caramel. You close the book knowing it was a pleasant journey, even if it won't change your life. A beginner's Caribbean novella - breezy, earnest, with the faintest ghost of what might come in a more mature sequel.

Distillation & Provenance

Distillation

Mount Gay Eclipse is the entry-level expression of the world's oldest rum distillery, first created in 1910 to commemorate the predicted eclipse of Halley's Comet — the original 'Eclipse' rum that remains the foundation of the Barbadian portfolio today. The expression blends rums produced in both copper pot stills and continuous column stills at the St. Lucy distillery, using molasses fermented with Mount Gay's proprietary yeast and water from the estate's artesian well. The blend is then aged in American oak barrels before reduction and blending to produce a consistently approachable, fruit-forward, banana and vanilla-noted Bajan rum. Bottled at 37.5% ABV.

Provenance

Mount Gay Rum is produced in the parish of St. Lucy at the northern tip of Barbados, on the site of what is recognised as the world's oldest continually operating commercial rum distillery — with documentary records dating to 1703. The distillery sits atop Mount Gilboa, drawing water from an on-site artesian well naturally filtered through Barbados's coral limestone. Originally established under the ownership of John Sober, the estate was later renamed in honour of Sir John Gay Alleyne, whose innovations transformed the operation. Mount Gay is the only Barbados plantation distillery to survive continuously to the present day, and remains a benchmark for Bajan rum production.
