Tasting Notes

One of the original pioneers in Central Otago, Nevis Bluff has been producing premium wines since 1998. Nevis Bluff channels the spirit of the pioneering gold prospectors who carved their fortunes from Central Otago’s rugged landscape. Winemaker Matt Connell crafts wines of precision and depth – each bottle a reflection of this region's wild beauty and enduring legacy. Once known for gold-mining in the 1800’s the new “rush” of Central Otago is for Pinot Noir. At altitude 45 Degree S, this is the southernmost wine producing region in the world. Sheltered by mountains, this inland area is New Zealand’s only wine region that has a continental climate rather than maritime. The hot, dry summers are followed by short, cool autumns and cold winters. Early-ripening Pinot Noir thrives in the steep and rocky terrain, achieving perfect ripeness in the sunny summer days while retaining its characteristic crisp acidity during the cool evenings.

Critic Scores

The 2024 vintage of this Single Vineyard Pinot Noir has scored 98 Points and a Double-Gold at The New Zealand International Wine Show 2025

Gorgeously styled and expressed, the wine shows dark plum, rich floral, thyme, smoked game, and hazelnut aromas on the nose. It's richly weighted with refinement and finesse, wonderfully complemented by velvety texture and fine-grained tannins, finishing splendidly long and satisfying. At its best: now to 2034.

Vineyard Cultivation

Nevis Bluff Wines is a Central Otago label made by Dean Shaw of The Central Otago Wine Company (COWCo) in Cromwell. The name references the Nevis Bluff landmark in the Kawarau Gorge. Central Otago's semi-continental climate, with warm days, cold nights and a marked diurnal swing, produces intensely coloured, richly perfumed Pinot Noir, while free-draining schist and loess soils restrict vigour and concentrate flavour. Shaw draws on his long experience in the district, having first worked in Central Otago in the mid-1990s, to select and manage the fruit. The 2024 growing season delivered ripe, structured Pinot fruit, and this single-vineyard wine reflects the perfumed, dark-fruited character for which the region is known.

Vinification

The fruit was vinified to capture Central Otago's depth and perfume, with fermentation and time on skins to draw colour and fine tannin, then maturation in French oak to add spice and integrate structure. The wine is gorgeously styled, showing dark plum, floral notes, thyme, smoked game and hazelnut on the nose, and is richly weighted yet refined, with velvety texture and fine-grained tannins carrying a long, satisfying finish. It was rated 98 points and awarded a Double Gold at the 2025 New Zealand International Wine Show, and is drinking well now with cellaring potential to around 2034. Precise whole-bunch and new-oak proportions for this release are not published.
