Tasting Notes

The Catena family has cultivated Mendoza’s vineyards for over a century, beginning with Nicolás Catena in 1902. Recognized by Robert Parker in 2005 as the leading visionary of Argentine wine, Catena Zapata became the only South American estate in his book "The World's 100 Greatest Wine Estates." Nicolás and his daughter, Dr. Laura Catena, have since strived to elevate Argentine wine. The winery’s Nicolás Catena Zapata cuvée, launched in 1997, was the first luxury wine from Argentina to gain international acclaim, blending Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon from pre-phylloxera vines, echoing historic Bordeaux blends.

An attractive perfume of cedar, pencil lead, cedar, blackberries, a mineral lift, and black cherry giving way to coffee grind and a sweet baked berry confiture note. Medium-bodied, it is full of dark fruit, with a silky texture, serious depth, and length for a wine of this price, well-concealed tannin, and a pure finish. Although it can be enjoyed now, this stylish Malbec will continue to improve up until 2030+.

Critic Scores

The 2022 Nicolás Catena Zapata blends 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Malbec and 11% Cabernet Franc from Gualtallary and Paraje Altamira. This aged for 18 months in first- and second-use French barrels. It shows great precision. The vintage brings ash, sour cherry, plum, lavender and oak notes of cedar, sandalwood, licorice, followed by blackberry. This is layered and expressive. On the palate, it delivers fine grip, juicy energy and length, with textural depth, light chalk and compact structure. The 2022 is full-bodied and pushed to its limits by the cool, dry year, with a final hint of talc. - Joaquin Hidalgo

The nose is luminous, with cassis, subtle mint, espresso, dark chocolate and dark, brooding fruit, The palate is medium- to full-bodied with an elegant thread of dark fruit and a succulent texture. The tannin structure is chiseled, supporting the pleasant, expressive fruit. A blend of 46% cabernet sauvignon, 43% malbec and 11% cabernet franc. Aged 18 months in barriques (60% new) and 18 months in bottles. Drink or hold.

About this Wine

Catena Zapata

“What is pleasing is to find such a famous winery refusing to rest upon its laurels looking forward and asking themselves questions about the style of wines they produce, what ought to be the next stage of their evolution, instead of merely replicating previous successes” - Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate

Over the past 20 years, Nicolás and Laura Catena and their vineyard management team have worked tirelessly in the discovery, identification and development of key microclimates in the high altitude wine country of Mendoza, Argentina. Nicolás determined that the same varietal, and even the same clone, presented distinct aromatic and flavor profiles when cultivated in each of these unique microclimates. Implementing the age old art of assemblage, he found that by blending these different lots of the same varietal, he could achieve a more complex wine.

As great artists tap their creative spirit to mix and match colors in the production of magnificent works of art, this wide array of distinct lot selections allows the winemaking team at Bodega Catena Zapata to engage in a creative, intricate process of blending in order to craft the final wine.
