Tasting Notes

Occhipinti ‘Siccagno’ Nero d’Avola 2022 is a refined expression of Sicily’s iconic red grape, crafted with a minimal-intervention approach in Vittoria. Made from 100% Nero d’Avola grown on 35-year-old vines, it captures the variety’s natural depth, freshness, and distinctive Mediterranean character.

Spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts takes place in cement tanks, followed by 22 months of aging in large Slavonian oak barrels. This thoughtful maturation preserves the wine’s vibrant fruit and purity while adding subtle structure, texture, and complexity.

The aromatic profile is inviting and expressive, with notes of wild blackberries, sour cherries, and liquorice layered over earthy Mediterranean nuances. On the palate, fresh acidity and elegant tannins create balance and energy, leading to a savoury, persistent finish marked by Sicilian earthiness.

A compelling Nero d’Avola from Vittoria, Siccagno combines purity, complexity, and understated elegance in a distinctive natural red wine with an unmistakable sense of place.

Vineyard Cultivation

Foradori is the celebrated Trentino estate revived by Elisabetta Foradori, best known for the red Teroldego of the Campo Rotaliano but equally regarded for its whites. Fontanasanta is a single vineyard on the slopes of the Valle di Cembra, planted to Manzoni Bianco (a Riesling x Pinot Bianco crossing) on lighter, higher, mineral alpine soils that give the wine its cool, tensile line and wet-stone character. The estate is farmed biodynamically (Demeter-certified), with a strong emphasis on soil life and site expression. Alpine altitude, granitic-porphyry influence and cool nights preserve acidity and aromatic freshness; specific 2024 growing-season conditions should be confirmed with the estate.

Vinification

The grapes are hand-harvested and, in the Fontanasanta style, given a period of skin contact to build texture and phenolic grip before pressing. Fermentation runs with indigenous yeasts, and the wine is fermented and matured in large acacia-wood casks (tonneaux) rather than oak, a choice that preserves the variety's citrus and floral aromatics while adding a savoury, textural dimension. Extended lees ageing lends breadth and the wet-wool and flinty depth noted by critics, while the finish stays crisp, precise and mineral. Exact skin-contact duration and elevage length for the 2024 vintage should be confirmed with the producer.

About this Wine

Nero d'Avola

Sicily's signature red grape, known for its ripe dark fruit, moderate tannin, and warm-climate richness.

Sicily

According to Greek legend, the god of wine Dionysus was the first to have planted a vineyard in Sicily; kick-starting the viticulture of the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It's one of the biggest wine producing regions in Italy with Veneto and Emilio Romagna the only two Italian regions that produce more. In all, the island has an impressive 134,000 hectares under vine although this area is shrinking year by year. This region produces a wide range of wines, both table and dessert wines and the grapes most famously grown there are the Nero d’Avola and Catorrato varietals. Nerello Mascalese is used to make the Etna Rosso DOC wine from the volcanic Mt Etna and Frappato is a the main grape of the Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG.

Sicily is blessed with the most favorable climate. The summers are hot and it hardly rains, and the winters are not that cold and frost is rare. The Mediterranean climate is ideal for growing wine grapes as the coastal winds drying out grapes overnight. Because of the warm and relatively dry climate, there are less risk of rot and mildew among the grapes, so chemical sprays are rarely used. The soil of Sicily is rocky and enriched with minerals that absorb the heat during the day and release it at night, which helps the grape vines maintain an even temperature while the air around it gets cooler.
