Tasting Notes

Patrick Piuze Chablis Le Bas de Chapelot 2023 marks the inaugural vintage of this distinctive Chablis cuvée, sourced from vines planted in 1982 beneath the Chapelots climat, near the renowned Montée de Tonnerre.

Crafted from Chardonnay, this white Burgundy expresses the hallmark character of Chablis, with a refined mineral profile, bright natural acidity, and elegant freshness. Its hillside origins bring depth and precision, while the mature vines contribute added concentration and complexity.

Patrick Piuze’s international winemaking experience, including work in Australia, South Africa, and Israel, informs a thoughtful approach that remains firmly rooted in the unique terroir of northern Burgundy. The result is a polished and expressive Chablis Premier Cru-style wine with excellent balance, purity, and length.

Pair this premium Burgundy white wine with oysters, shellfish, grilled fish, fresh chèvre, or simply enjoy it as a captivating expression of the Chablis terroir.

Critic Scores

The latest addition to the range, Piuze’s 2023 Chablis Les Bas de Chapelot derives from a site below Les Chapelots lieu-dit. Revealing aromas of peaches, pear and beeswax, it's medium to full-bodied, racy and precise, with a satiny palate and concluding with a saline finish. It’s an undeniably a high-standard Chablis AOC.

This is the first vintage of the Chablis “Le Bas de Chapelôt” from Patrick Piuze. It is made from a 1.9 hectare parcel of forty-plus year-old vines and has turned out excellently in its debut vintage. The wine’s nose is bright and complex, offering up scents of pear, tart orange, anise, a lovely base of chalky soil tones, citrus zest and a topnote of white flowers. On the palate the wine is crisp, full-bodied, focused and complex, with a good core of fruit, fine soil signature and grip and a long, poised and zesty finish. A lovely new addition to the lineup.

Burgundy

Burgundy is undoubtedly the home of the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnays in the world, where vineyards, or Domaines have been producing wines for over 2000 years. Burgundy is located in the North-east of France, an hours drive from Lyon and 2 hours from Paris. With over 100 appellations, or sub-regions (more than any other wine region) Burgundy is known for being the most terroir-oriented region in the World. The finest red wines of Burgundy are found in the Côte d'Or, a string of villages including Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey St Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-St Georges.

There are flavours present in great Burgundys that are the envy of Pinot Noir producers worldwide. The elusive peacocks tail finish that goes on and on, and the pretty-elegance backed by Burgundy muscle is the goal of winemakers around the globe. The main levels in the Burgundy classifications, in descending order of quality, are: Grand crus, Premier crus, village appellations, and finally regional appellations. For the Chablis wines, a similar hierarchy of Grand Cru, Premier Cru and Village wines is used, plus Petit Chablis as a level below Village Chablis.
