Tasting Notes

Penfolds RWT Shiraz presents an admirable alternative to the multi-regional sourcing and American oak maturation that are hallmarks of Grange, expressing instead, single-region Barossa Valley shiraz matured in French oak barriques. The initials RWT stand for 'Red Winemaking Trial', the name given to the project internally when developmental work began in 1995. RWT Shiraz was launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage. Its style is opulent and fleshy, contrasting with Grange, which is more muscular and assertive. RWT is made from fruit primarily selected for its aromatic qualities and fine texture rather than sheer intensity or power of flavour. The result is a wine that helps to redefine Barossa shiraz at the highest quality level.

Critic Scores

Deep crimson. Intense blackberry, praline, cinnamon, roasted chestnut, vanilla aromas with spicy, espresso notes. Ample in structure and densely packed yet gorgeously balanced with deep set inky blackberry, dark plum, mulberry fruit, velvety smooth textures, meaty nuances and superb spicy vanilla oak complexity. Finishes chocolaty with plenty of fruit sweetness and mineral length. This could be Grange in French Oak, a wonderful RWT with superb balance, richness of flavour, minerality and lasting power. A complete triumph. Drink in a while or keep

May explain why Kalimna Bin 28 is the least of the Bin series reds, for this wine takes the finest shiraz from the Barossa Valley once Grange has had its choice. The call is made early, because this wine spends 16 months in French oak hogsheads (75% new), finishing its ferment in that oak, separating it at birth from Grange in American oak. The bouquet abounds with black fruits, with sub-notes of dark chocolate, licorice and some charcuterie. The palate is drop-dead gorgeous, a curious description given its strongly savoury flavour range, but it achieves the unlikely. As with all these wines, the tannin structure is exceptional, the length prodigious.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

The 2012 RWT Shiraz benefited from a warm, dry South Australian growing season that delivered excellent phenolic ripeness across Barossa Valley and associated regions. Primary sources were premium Barossa fruit, reflecting the valley's ideal conditions for Shiraz in 2012. Warm weather concentrated sugars and flavour compounds, whilst relatively low spring rainfall kept disease pressure minimal and berries compact. Vineyard selection favoured blocks with natural vigour control and established root systems, allowing vines to manage the warmth and stress naturally. The 2012 harvest was among the earliest in recent years, demonstrating the vintage's early ripening profile.

Vinification

2012 RWT Shiraz underwent warm-vintage fermentation management with careful temperature control to channel the abundant extractives into balanced structure rather than excessive alcohol. Primary fermentation was managed for mid-palate concentration and colour development. Extended post-ferment maceration allowed tannin maturation and complexity. Oak maturation over 18 months in American and French cooperage integrated the vintage's powerful tannins and high-extract profile. Penfolds employed its signature lees-stirring protocol to refine textural elements. The resulting wine showcased 2012's warmth and concentration whilst maintaining Penfolds' house style of structured, age-worthy reds.

About this Wine

Penfolds

Penfolds was established in 1844 by a young English doctor, Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold. He built a cottage in Magill, on the outskirts of Adelaide with his wife Mary, and it was around this site that vine cuttings from the South of France were planted. Peter Gago joined Penfolds in 1989, and in 2002, he became Chief Winemaker. He leads an incredibly talented and experienced winemaking team who follow the traditions established by Penfolds previous owners.

Penfolds house style wines embrace the idea of multi-regional blending, optimum fruit quality, the use of fine-grained American and French oak and most often, barrel fermentation and maturation. Penfolds has played a big part in the evolution of winemaking in Australia - and across the world. Their biggest viticultural regions include Adelaide, the Barossa Valley, the Clare Valley, Coonawarra, Limestone Coast, and McLaren Vale. In total, grapes are sourced from more than 220 vineyards across Australia and only the best are chosen.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
