First made in 1960 by legendary winemaker Max Schubert, Bin 389 was created to capture the richness of Penfolds’ Grange style while showcasing Cabernet Sauvignon. It became a defining Australian blend, earning the nickname “Baby Grange” and a place in the country’s wine history.

Cabernet brings cassis, blackberry and structure, while Shiraz adds ripe plum, chocolate and spice. Full-bodied, smooth and generous, it’s a classic crowd-pleaser with steak, lamb, barbecue or a hearty Sunday roast.

Critic Scores

The 2020 RWT Shiraz Bin 798 is a powerhouse of bloody fruit and firm tannin. It veritably explodes from the blocks, showing plum skin, raspberry leaf, blackberry, mulberry, lashings of salted licorice and rendered lamb fat. I am coming to love (in a big and serious way) the Barossa Shiraz' bottlings from 2020—the year was significantly down in yields, warm and dry, and responsible for wines of muscle, density and gravitas. So, too, for this wine. Excellent.

This is a wonderful Bin 789 with striking poise, polish and intensity on offer. Show-stopping aromas of ripe blackberry, dark plum and espresso are primal and freshly captured. The palate is rich and lusciously expressed, with a very plush and intense core of ripe blackberry and dark-plum fruit. Roasted coffee here, too. Such poise and polish. Drink over the next decade or more.

Very deep, concentrated red-purple colour; deep-set black fruit aromas, laced with dried herbs, thyme and oregano, the palate massive and super-powerful in typical RWT style. A biggie, and a very grand wine. The tannins are remarkably smooth and supple for such a whopper. Superb wine. Drink: 2024–2047.

Deep colour. Beautiful blackberry, blackcurrant, dark chocolate, roasted chestnut, hint marzipan. Lovely plush concentrated wine with smooth blackberry, dark plum fruits, fine loose-knit slinky/graphite tannins, underlying roasted chestnut oak and fresh mineral acidity. Finishes velvety firm with some mocha notes. Very good density, fruit richness and vigour. The Penfolds winemaking stamp nicely balanced with the opulence and beauty of ripe Barossa shiraz. Drink 2024-2045.

Opaque violet. Smoke-accented cherry, dark berry preserve, fruitcake and incense aromas are complemented by suggestions of vanilla, cola and baking spices. Fleshy and expansive on the palate, offering alluringly sweet black and blue fruit, vanilla, exotic spice and dark chocolate flavors and repeating smokiness. Displays excellent clarity and spicy lift on the impressively long, smooth finish, which features polished tannins and reverberating blue fruit and floral notes. All French oak, 49% of it new. Drink: 2028-2038.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

The 2020 growing season in the Barossa Valley presented challenges through drought conditions offset by careful canopy and water management. Despite the drier season, quality Shiraz fruit was produced with excellent concentration and colour. Penfolds' vineyard management focused on sustainable practices, preserving fruit quality whilst responding to climate variability. The Barossa Valley's soils—rich red volcanic and loamy clay—provided necessary mineral availability during the drier vintage. Penfolds' long-established partnerships with Barossa growers allowed coordinated ripeness management and selective harvesting. The 2020 vintage represents the Barossa's characteristic ripeness despite challenging growing conditions.

Vinification

Fruit from the 2020 vintage underwent careful destemming and traditional fermentation in open vessels with hand-plunging for tannin extraction. Fermentation was closely monitored to manage intensity and extract optimal colour and flavour. Post-fermentation, malolactic conversion developed secondary complexity and palate softness. Maturation occurred in American oak hogsheads for approximately twenty months, integrating oak spice and vanilla with the concentrated fruit. The extended élevage period allows for phenolic maturation and structural integration, building the wine's capacity for cellaring.

About this Wine

Shiraz

Bold and full-bodied, Shiraz delivers rich dark fruit flavours of blackberry, plum, and black cherry, layered with black pepper, clove, and subtle smoke. Firm tannins and a velvety texture give it real structure, often rounded out by notes of chocolate and vanilla from oak ageing. A versatile pairing partner for grilled meats and hearty dishes, it's one of Australia's most planted red varieties

Penfolds

Penfolds was established in 1844 by a young English doctor, Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold. He built a cottage in Magill, on the outskirts of Adelaide with his wife Mary, and it was around this site that vine cuttings from the South of France were planted. Peter Gago joined Penfolds in 1989, and in 2002, he became Chief Winemaker. He leads an incredibly talented and experienced winemaking team who follow the traditions established by Penfolds previous owners.

Penfolds house style wines embrace the idea of multi-regional blending, optimum fruit quality, the use of fine-grained American and French oak and most often, barrel fermentation and maturation. Penfolds has played a big part in the evolution of winemaking in Australia - and across the world. Their biggest viticultural regions include Adelaide, the Barossa Valley, the Clare Valley, Coonawarra, Limestone Coast, and McLaren Vale. In total, grapes are sourced from more than 220 vineyards across Australia and only the best are chosen.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
