Tasting Notes

As hoped and expected; beautiful colour; a wonderful bouquet, with black fruits of various kinds the engine, oak in tow.

- James Halliday

Penfolds Grange is Australia's most important wine. Beginning life as an experiment by the visionary that was Max Schubert, Grange has become a wine icon. Officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia, Grange is a multi-regional masterpiece that shows power, concentration and balance to showcase the very best in Australian wine.

Totally opaque, black purple colour with black purple hue. Superb nose, perfumed with violet, spice top notes. The palate is structured in such a way as to slowly release its flavour compounds over many decades. Flavours of vanilla, spice and liquorice allsorts – followed by a black pepper back palate. Perfect balance. Very long aftertaste of spice and black pepper.

Enjoy with family and friends. Pairs well with a beef fillet and venison.

Critic Scores

It is always a treat to taste Australia’s most famous wine, Penfolds’ Grange cuvee (the word Hermitage has been dropped because of legal issues). The 2001 Grange is one of the few vintages of this cuvee to be composed of 100% Shiraz (the others being 1951, 1952, 1963, 1999, and 2000). Aged 17 months in 100% American oak, and tipping the scales at 14.5% alcohol, the 2001 is undeniably one of the top examples of this wine. At this stage, it appears to eclipse the 1998 and 1996. Inky/blue/purple to the rim, with a stunning perfume of blueberries, blackberries, chocolate, graphite, and earth, it boasts good acidity, huge tannins, magnificent concentration, and a multilayered, textured mouthfeel. It is a big, but impeccably well-balanced Shiraz that should shed some of its structure and tannin over the next 4-5 years, and be at its best between 2010-2030+

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

The 2001 Grange sources from South Australia's premium Shiraz regions, predominantly the Barossa Valley. Red volcanic loam and weathered granite soils characterise these established vineyard sites, providing mineral complexity and tannin structure. The Barossa Valley's warm continental climate supports full ripeness in Shiraz, with diurnal temperature variation contributing balance and complexity. The 2001 vintage followed a generally favourable growing season with moderate warmth and adequate moisture, yielding good fruit quality.

Vinification

Grange 2001 underwent traditional fermentation in temperature-controlled vessels, followed by 18 months in new American oak. This consistent winemaking approach ensures phenolic maturity and colour stability over extended aging. Malolactic fermentation occurred in barrel, building complexity and softening harsh tannins. The wine achieved complete dryness, typical of the Penfolds house style for premium reds.

About this Wine

Penfolds

Penfolds was established in 1844 by a young English doctor, Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold. He built a cottage in Magill, on the outskirts of Adelaide with his wife Mary, and it was around this site that vine cuttings from the South of France were planted. Peter Gago joined Penfolds in 1989, and in 2002, he became Chief Winemaker. He leads an incredibly talented and experienced winemaking team who follow the traditions established by Penfolds previous owners.

Penfolds house style wines embrace the idea of multi-regional blending, optimum fruit quality, the use of fine-grained American and French oak and most often, barrel fermentation and maturation. Penfolds has played a big part in the evolution of winemaking in Australia - and across the world. Their biggest viticultural regions include Adelaide, the Barossa Valley, the Clare Valley, Coonawarra, Limestone Coast, and McLaren Vale. In total, grapes are sourced from more than 220 vineyards across Australia and only the best are chosen.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
