First made in the 1950s, St Henri is one of Penfolds’ great historic wines. Created as an alternative expression of Shiraz to Grange, it famously avoids new oak, allowing the fruit, maturity and vineyard character to take centre stage.

Rich blackberry, plum and dark-chocolate flavours combine with savoury spice, earth and silky tannins. Plush yet refined, it’s a brilliant match for steak, roast lamb, slow-cooked beef or a special Sunday dinner.

Tasting Notes

Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2015 is a distinguished Australian Shiraz renowned for its depth, elegance and exceptional cellaring potential. First made in the 1950s, St Henri is one of Penfolds’ great historic wines, created as an alternative expression of Shiraz to Grange.

Rather than being matured in new oak, St Henri is aged in large, seasoned vats. This distinctive approach allows the purity of the fruit, vintage character and vineyard expression to take centre stage, resulting in a refined South Australian red wine with remarkable texture and balance.

Rich blackberry, ripe plum and dark-chocolate flavours unfold with savoury spice, earthy nuances and silky tannins. Plush yet composed, the 2015 vintage offers impressive depth, a layered palate and a lingering finish. Enjoy now with decanting or add to a fine wine collection for further development in the cellar.

An exceptional pairing for grilled steak, roast lamb, slow-cooked beef and special Sunday dinners, this premium Penfolds Shiraz is sourced from a private cellar and is a compelling addition to any collection of Australian fine wine.

Critic Scores

93% shiraz, 7% cabernet sauvignon from McLaren Vale, Robe, The Peninsulas, Barossa Valley, Wrattonbully, Adelaide Hills and Mount Benson, matured for 12 months in 50+yo large oak vats. Deep crimson-purple; an almost tarry note lurks in the blackcurrant, tapenade and earth of the bouquet; there is a torrent of flavour, richer yet cooler than many '15s.

Aged for 12 months in over 50-year-old large wooden vats, St. Henri shows refreshing little oak when compared to some of the brand's other premium reds. It's still unmistakably Penfolds, though: rich and polished. The nose is a downright pretty mix of sun-ripened blueberries, mocha, violets, black olives and touches of fresh eucalyptus leaves and Middle Eastern spices. There's power on the palate but elegance too. Silky with an even-handed grip of savory fine tannins, the fruit is ripe and plush and set up for aging. Drink now, with decanter and protein at hand, or cellar through 2029. Christina Pickard

A very silky and approachable edition with a fresh, leathery edge, ahead of mainly redder fruit, pastry, cedar, leaves and a dried eucalyptus-leaf note. The palate is long, silky and supple with a succulent array of redder fruit and blackberry notes. Super primary and elegant. This is a young pup, nicely proportioned but slightly simple for now. Give it plenty of time in the cellar. A blend of 93 per cent shiraz and seven per cent cabernet sauvignon, sourced from McLaren Vale, Robe, The Peninsulas, Barossa Valley, Wrattonbully, Adelaide Hills and Mt. Benson. Try from 2025.

About this Wine

Shiraz

Bold and full-bodied, Shiraz delivers rich dark fruit flavours of blackberry, plum, and black cherry, layered with black pepper, clove, and subtle smoke. Firm tannins and a velvety texture give it real structure, often rounded out by notes of chocolate and vanilla from oak ageing. A versatile pairing partner for grilled meats and hearty dishes, it's one of Australia's most planted red varieties

Penfolds

Penfolds was established in 1844 by a young English doctor, Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold. He built a cottage in Magill, on the outskirts of Adelaide with his wife Mary, and it was around this site that vine cuttings from the South of France were planted. Peter Gago joined Penfolds in 1989, and in 2002, he became Chief Winemaker. He leads an incredibly talented and experienced winemaking team who follow the traditions established by Penfolds previous owners.

Penfolds house style wines embrace the idea of multi-regional blending, optimum fruit quality, the use of fine-grained American and French oak and most often, barrel fermentation and maturation. Penfolds has played a big part in the evolution of winemaking in Australia - and across the world. Their biggest viticultural regions include Adelaide, the Barossa Valley, the Clare Valley, Coonawarra, Limestone Coast, and McLaren Vale. In total, grapes are sourced from more than 220 vineyards across Australia and only the best are chosen.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
