First made in the 1950s, St Henri is one of Penfolds’ great historic wines. Created as an alternative expression of Shiraz to Grange, it famously avoids new oak, allowing the fruit, maturity and vineyard character to take centre stage.

Rich blackberry, plum and dark-chocolate flavours combine with savoury spice, earth and silky tannins. Plush yet refined, it’s a brilliant match for steak, roast lamb, slow-cooked beef or a special Sunday dinner.

Tasting Notes

Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2018 is one of Australia’s most iconic premium red wines, celebrated for its distinctive style and remarkable heritage. First made in the 1950s, St Henri was created as an alternative expression of Shiraz to Grange, offering a more savoury, fruit-driven interpretation of this classic Australian variety.

Unlike wines matured in new oak, St Henri is aged in large, seasoned vats. This traditional approach allows the richness of the fruit, the character of the vineyards and the wine’s natural maturity to take centre stage. The 2018 vintage presents generous layers of blackberry, dark plum and dark chocolate, complemented by savoury spice, earthy complexity and beautifully integrated, silky tannins.

Plush and full-bodied yet refined, this collectible Australian Shiraz delivers impressive depth, structure and length. A polished finish and excellent cellaring potential make it a distinguished addition to a fine wine collection, while its approachable character allows it to be enjoyed now.

Pair this premium Penfolds Shiraz with grilled steak, roast lamb, slow-cooked beef or richly flavoured Sunday roasts. Sourced from a premium private cellar, Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2018 is a highly sought-after choice for special occasions and lovers of exceptional Australian wine.

Critic Scores

A great St. Henri and, although multi-regional, this is very much a wine that speaks of the Barossa Valley, with aromas of ripe blackberries and red plums that are so fresh, together with tobacco, young-leather, earth, chocolate, coal-smoke and tarry accents. Effortless depth on the palate with summer berries, framed in fine, alabaster-like tannins that are underscored with discreet power. So long and captivating.

A blend of Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Port Lincoln, Robe, Padthaway, Clare Valley and Adelaide Hills. Drink over the next decade or more.

The wine of the entire release. An extraordinarily good St Henri and I could not encourage winelovers to fill their cellars with this wine more strongly. This will comfortably sit with 2010 and 2012 and I have no doubt that in years to come, it will be considered as one of the greatest St Henri’s ever made. It is that good. This is perfectly structured. Balance is the key. This has decades ahead. A great St Henri.

About this Wine

Shiraz

Bold and full-bodied, Shiraz delivers rich dark fruit flavours of blackberry, plum, and black cherry, layered with black pepper, clove, and subtle smoke. Firm tannins and a velvety texture give it real structure, often rounded out by notes of chocolate and vanilla from oak ageing. A versatile pairing partner for grilled meats and hearty dishes, it's one of Australia's most planted red varieties

Penfolds

Penfolds was established in 1844 by a young English doctor, Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold. He built a cottage in Magill, on the outskirts of Adelaide with his wife Mary, and it was around this site that vine cuttings from the South of France were planted. Peter Gago joined Penfolds in 1989, and in 2002, he became Chief Winemaker. He leads an incredibly talented and experienced winemaking team who follow the traditions established by Penfolds previous owners.

Penfolds house style wines embrace the idea of multi-regional blending, optimum fruit quality, the use of fine-grained American and French oak and most often, barrel fermentation and maturation. Penfolds has played a big part in the evolution of winemaking in Australia - and across the world. Their biggest viticultural regions include Adelaide, the Barossa Valley, the Clare Valley, Coonawarra, Limestone Coast, and McLaren Vale. In total, grapes are sourced from more than 220 vineyards across Australia and only the best are chosen.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
