First made in the 1950s, St Henri is one of Penfolds’ great historic wines. Created as an alternative expression of Shiraz to Grange, it famously avoids new oak, allowing the fruit, maturity and vineyard character to take centre stage.

Rich blackberry, plum and dark-chocolate flavours combine with savoury spice, earth and silky tannins. Plush yet refined, it’s a brilliant match for steak, roast lamb, slow-cooked beef or a special Sunday dinner.

Tasting Notes

Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2016 is a distinguished South Australian red wine and one of Penfolds’ great historic releases. First made in the 1950s, St Henri was created as an alternative expression of Shiraz to Grange, offering a more savoury and refined style that places fruit, maturity and vineyard character at the forefront.

Famously matured without new oak, this premium Shiraz showcases generous layers of blackberry, ripe plum and dark chocolate, complemented by savoury spice, earthy complexity and beautifully silky tannins. Plush yet elegant, it delivers impressive depth and concentration with a polished, long-lasting finish.

A superb addition to any fine Australian wine collection, the 2016 vintage is well suited to cellaring or enjoying now after careful decanting. Pair this acclaimed Shiraz with grilled steak, roast lamb, slow-cooked beef or a special Sunday dinner. Sourced from a premium private cellar.

Critic Scores

This is a much anticipated vintage for St. Henri, and it does not disappoint. The complexity of fruit here is stunning, together with a very complex and playfully fragrant, spicy edge with graphite, roasted coffee and woody spices, framing a core of very fresh blackberries, red and dark cherries and blueberries. So fresh and brimming with fruit aromas. The palate has a stunning array of deeply fleshy fruit flavors with a superb sense of length and powerful, ripe tannin, underpinning vibrant, fleshy fruit that is beautifully assembled in a refined, elegant and impressively pure mode. So long and pure. Silky and elegant. A real masterpiece, taking its place among the finest vintages like 2010, 1990 and 1971. 95% shiraz and 5% cabernet sauvignon. Drink over the next three decades.

The 2016 St Henri Shiraz is one of the finest St Henris I've ever tasted, rivaling the likes of the 1986 or 1976. It's concentrated and rich, the essence of South Australia Shiraz (although it's been lightened by the addition of 5% Cabernet Sauvignon), unleavened by any new oak. Dark and tarry, it delivers notes of espresso and black olive, plummy fruit and roasted meat. Full-bodied and dense on the palate, it ends long, dark and savory.

The latest St. Henri has all the polished, chocolaty plushness Penfolds is so known for, but this bottling is particularly comfortable in its own skin, and seems set for a longer time in cellar than Penfolds Grange. It's denser, with more earthy, olivey, charred oak notes than the brand's most famous wine—and also wildly more affordable—with fleshy plum and brambly berry fruit woven into those more barrel-derived secondary notes. Despite its velvety opulence, it's not bombastic. Tannins are muscular and spicy and also precise and refined, knitting together the plump fruit. Drink 2023–2040 and likely longer. Christina Pickard

Dark ruby garnet, purple reflections, faint ochre rim. Multi-faceted bouquet with notes of fresh cherry, a hint of roasted coffee bean, dark nougat, spices like cardamom and oregano. Juicy and elegant with round, supporting tannins – not yet fully integrated, cherry and delicate vegetal notes on the finish and a taut, mineral style. Definitely still needs time.

About this Wine

Shiraz

Bold and full-bodied, Shiraz delivers rich dark fruit flavours of blackberry, plum, and black cherry, layered with black pepper, clove, and subtle smoke. Firm tannins and a velvety texture give it real structure, often rounded out by notes of chocolate and vanilla from oak ageing. A versatile pairing partner for grilled meats and hearty dishes, it's one of Australia's most planted red varieties

Penfolds

Penfolds was established in 1844 by a young English doctor, Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold. He built a cottage in Magill, on the outskirts of Adelaide with his wife Mary, and it was around this site that vine cuttings from the South of France were planted. Peter Gago joined Penfolds in 1989, and in 2002, he became Chief Winemaker. He leads an incredibly talented and experienced winemaking team who follow the traditions established by Penfolds previous owners.

Penfolds house style wines embrace the idea of multi-regional blending, optimum fruit quality, the use of fine-grained American and French oak and most often, barrel fermentation and maturation. Penfolds has played a big part in the evolution of winemaking in Australia - and across the world. Their biggest viticultural regions include Adelaide, the Barossa Valley, the Clare Valley, Coonawarra, Limestone Coast, and McLaren Vale. In total, grapes are sourced from more than 220 vineyards across Australia and only the best are chosen.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
