First made in the 1950s, St Henri is one of Penfolds’ great historic wines. Created as an alternative expression of Shiraz to Grange, it famously avoids new oak, allowing the fruit, maturity and vineyard character to take centre stage.

Rich blackberry, plum and dark-chocolate flavours combine with savoury spice, earth and silky tannins. Plush yet refined, it’s a brilliant match for steak, roast lamb, slow-cooked beef or a special Sunday dinner.

Tasting Notes

Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2019 is a distinguished Australian Shiraz, celebrated for its depth, elegance and distinctive oak-free style. First made in the 1950s, St Henri is one of Penfolds’ great historic wines and was created as an alternative expression of Shiraz to Grange. By avoiding new oak, it allows the purity of the fruit, maturity and vineyard character to take centre stage.

Rich blackberry and plum flavours unfold with layers of dark chocolate, savoury spice and subtle earthy complexity. The palate is plush yet refined, supported by silky tannins, balanced structure and a long, graceful finish. This premium red wine offers an expressive and nuanced alternative to oak-driven Shiraz, with generous fruit character and impressive depth.

Sourced from a premium private cellar, Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2019 is an exceptional choice for collectors of fine Australian wine and lovers of mature, full-bodied Shiraz. Enjoy it with grilled steak, roast lamb, slow-cooked beef or a special Sunday dinner.

Critic Scores

Immediately spicy and complex, this has a rich blackberry and dark-plum nose, together with dark-chocolate and tarry, earthy elements. The palate has a very rich, fleshy feel with such ripe dark-plum, dark-chocolate, blackberry and mulberry flavors on offer. Generous, yet balanced. A South Australian blend of McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Wrattonbully and The Peninsulas. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Dark ruby, purple reflections, subtle ochre rim brightening. Fine dark berries, a hint of eucalyptus and bergamot, sweet black berries, nougat, very attractive bouquet, candied mandarin zest. Juicy, complex, finely spiced, good freshness, powerful, with fine, ripe tannins, lemon delicate aspects on the finish, already gluggable, a great food companion with staying power. (now - 2050).

The St Henri Shiraz is often one of my favorite reds in the Penfolds Collection, due to the ability of the fruit to shine through the fine sheath of oak that encases it. At this stage, and I know you will hear this often, the wine still represents good value. The 2019 St Henri Shiraz is elegantly structured, with the 2019 vintage showing the warmth and intensity without overstepping balance or line. Texturally, this will only increase in its silky shape, which comes with the gentle suggestion to decant this if you insist on drinking it within five years from harvest (i.e., anytime from now to 2024). This 2019 is shaped by abundant red and purple fruit (and a splash of blue), charry spice and fine tannins. Gorgeous.

This vintage of St. Henri opens with an opulent nose that you could dive into. Plump black currant, raspberry tart, mint and dusty pepper spice accompany barrel-derived notes like chocolate and charred vegetables. The palate is still tightly wound, even austere, with sandpaper-textured tannins and lifted acidity. Still in its infancy, this wine should be cellared another five to seven years.

About this Wine

Shiraz

Bold and full-bodied, Shiraz delivers rich dark fruit flavours of blackberry, plum, and black cherry, layered with black pepper, clove, and subtle smoke. Firm tannins and a velvety texture give it real structure, often rounded out by notes of chocolate and vanilla from oak ageing. A versatile pairing partner for grilled meats and hearty dishes, it's one of Australia's most planted red varieties

Penfolds

Penfolds was established in 1844 by a young English doctor, Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold. He built a cottage in Magill, on the outskirts of Adelaide with his wife Mary, and it was around this site that vine cuttings from the South of France were planted. Peter Gago joined Penfolds in 1989, and in 2002, he became Chief Winemaker. He leads an incredibly talented and experienced winemaking team who follow the traditions established by Penfolds previous owners.

Penfolds house style wines embrace the idea of multi-regional blending, optimum fruit quality, the use of fine-grained American and French oak and most often, barrel fermentation and maturation. Penfolds has played a big part in the evolution of winemaking in Australia - and across the world. Their biggest viticultural regions include Adelaide, the Barossa Valley, the Clare Valley, Coonawarra, Limestone Coast, and McLaren Vale. In total, grapes are sourced from more than 220 vineyards across Australia and only the best are chosen.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
