First made in the 1950s, St Henri is one of Penfolds’ great historic wines. Created as an alternative expression of Shiraz to Grange, it famously avoids new oak, allowing the fruit, maturity and vineyard character to take centre stage.

Rich blackberry, plum and dark-chocolate flavours combine with savoury spice, earth and silky tannins. Plush yet refined, it’s a brilliant match for steak, roast lamb, slow-cooked beef or a special Sunday dinner.

Tasting Notes

Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2021 is one of Australia’s great historic red wines, first made in the 1950s and celebrated for its distinctive expression of premium Shiraz. Unlike many full-bodied Australian Shiraz wines, St Henri is matured without new oak, allowing the purity of the fruit, vineyard character and natural maturity to take centre stage.

Rich and refined, the palate reveals generous layers of blackberry, ripe plum and dark chocolate, complemented by savoury spice, earthy complexity and beautifully silky tannins. Plush in texture yet finely balanced, this distinguished Australian red wine offers impressive depth, elegance and a long, memorable finish.

A superb choice for a special dinner or premium wine collection, Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2021 pairs beautifully with grilled steak, roast lamb, slow-cooked beef and other richly flavoured dishes. Sourced from a premium private cellar, it is a compelling addition to any collection of fine Australian wine.

Critic Scores

I recently tasted a vertical of St Henri from 1958 through to this 2021, and just behind the 1962 and 2010, the 2021 was among the top five best St Henri's ever made. The 2021 St Henri Shiraz has succulence and balance, and it is fresh and unencumbered by heavy oak characters via the adherence to large-format, seasoned oak and the blessing of the season. The tannic density and weight of the wine comes from the fruit rather than the vessel, and this will hold it is great stead over the decades to come. This was sourced from Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. 2021 was a lovely season in South Australia; the lead-in was wet from August onward, replenishing the arid ground from the past three vintages of drought. The season was long and warm but rarely, if ever, hot, with well-timed rain events that allowed producers, for the most part, to avoid viticultural pressure. Having explained this, I have found many of the reds from 2021 to be really quite ripe—it seems to me that many people had the opportunity to leave fruit on the vine, and many did. This feels to buck that trend. Excellent. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.

This is an enticing and downright charming vintage of St. Henri. A wine that, unlike many in the Penfolds portfolio, never sees new oak. The fruit is in the spotlight here, and shine it does, in a gentle, settled kind of way. Raspberry and blood plum are underpinned by soft herbs, milk chocolate and a hoisin-like tang. It's velvety and plush without feeling overly heavy or muscle-bound. Lovely now, it will continue to be lovely for a great many more years.

Blackberries and dark chocolate with some toasted nuts, oak and graphite give this very enticing aromas that follow through to a medium body with a solid core of fruit and fine tannins that spread across the palate. Extremely well crafted overall and easy to drink young. Drink or hold.

About this Wine

Shiraz

Bold and full-bodied, Shiraz delivers rich dark fruit flavours of blackberry, plum, and black cherry, layered with black pepper, clove, and subtle smoke. Firm tannins and a velvety texture give it real structure, often rounded out by notes of chocolate and vanilla from oak ageing. A versatile pairing partner for grilled meats and hearty dishes, it's one of Australia's most planted red varieties

Penfolds

Penfolds was established in 1844 by a young English doctor, Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold. He built a cottage in Magill, on the outskirts of Adelaide with his wife Mary, and it was around this site that vine cuttings from the South of France were planted. Peter Gago joined Penfolds in 1989, and in 2002, he became Chief Winemaker. He leads an incredibly talented and experienced winemaking team who follow the traditions established by Penfolds previous owners.

Penfolds house style wines embrace the idea of multi-regional blending, optimum fruit quality, the use of fine-grained American and French oak and most often, barrel fermentation and maturation. Penfolds has played a big part in the evolution of winemaking in Australia - and across the world. Their biggest viticultural regions include Adelaide, the Barossa Valley, the Clare Valley, Coonawarra, Limestone Coast, and McLaren Vale. In total, grapes are sourced from more than 220 vineyards across Australia and only the best are chosen.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
