Tasting Notes

Peregrine Mohua Central Otago Pinot Noir 2023 is a superb expression of New Zealand’s renowned Central Otago wine region, celebrated for its cool climate and unique terroir. Crafted from the prestigious Pinot Noir grape, this vintage captures the essence of 2023’s exceptional growing season, yielding wines with vibrant fruit purity and refined structure.

This Pinot Noir offers an enticing bouquet of red cherry, raspberry, and subtle floral notes, complemented by earthy undertones and a hint of spice. On the palate, it reveals a harmonious balance of bright acidity and silky tannins, delivering a medium-bodied wine with impressive depth and length. The cool Central Otago climate, characterized by crisp days and cool nights, allows for slow ripening, which enhances the wine’s complexity and freshness.

Known for its meticulous craftsmanship, Peregrine’s winemaking approach highlights minimal intervention to preserve the delicate nuances of the fruit. The 2023 vintage particularly benefited from ideal ripening conditions, resulting in wines that exhibit both elegance and intensity. This Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with a range of dishes, from duck and game to mushroom-based cuisine and soft cheeses.

Experience the distinctive character of Central Otago through Peregrine Mohua 2023—an excellent choice for collectors and enthusiasts seeking a premium, terroir-driven Pinot Noir.

Vineyard Cultivation

Mohua is a Central Otago label produced by Peregrine Wines, the respected Gibbston-based estate, offering an accessible expression of the region under winemaker Nadine Cross. Central Otago is the world's southernmost commercial wine region, a high, semi-continental landscape of short, warm days and cold nights that build colour, aromatic intensity and firm natural acidity in Pinot Noir. Fruit is drawn from vineyards across the district on schist-derived, free-draining loess and gravel soils. The 2023 season produced bright, aromatic fruit; the wine shows crimson colour, lifted red cherry, raspberry and subtle spice with floral and earthy nuance, and the fresh, energetic structure that marks cool-climate Otago Pinot.

Vinification

The 2023 Mohua was largely destemmed, perhaps with a small whole-bunch portion, cold-soaked and fermented in open vessels with plunging to draw gentle colour and fine tannin. Fermentation was followed by malolactic conversion and maturation in French oak, mostly seasoned with a modest new-oak fraction, for an approachable, fruit-forward style rather than a heavily worked one. The result is light to medium-bodied and silky, offering fresh red cherry and raspberry supported by fine tannins and lively acidity, with a gentle savoury edge building through the mid-palate. Reviewers found it smooth, bright and expressive, an elegant yet flavoursome wine with regional character and a long, velvety finish.
