Tasting Notes

In the words of Jeremy Oliver, “Pierro is one of the few Australian wineries that could claim to have established a trend that many others have followed. Since the mid 1980’s Mike Peterkin has crafted a chardonnay of not only monumental power, but of simultaneously smooth and silky delivery”. The Pierro ‘style’ was first made in 1986 and refined with every subsequent vintage. Mike had initially intended to specialise in Riesling on his Willyabrup plot, so it was a tad fortuitous that Chardonnay became Pierro's most famous wine. His vine supplier had been let down on a large order of Chardonnay rootstock, approximately 5000 cuttings, and offered them to Mike at a cut price. In order to help out his friend he agreed to take them. It was an inspired decision. Today the Pierro is regarded as one of the finest Chardonnays in the region. Seeing as Margaret River is indisputably Australia!s premier Chardonnay producing region, this is a major honour. Each parcel is hand-picked, chilled, hand-sorted and gently whole bunch pressed. There are multiple picks for this wine. With the first batches being picked for aromatic complexity and acidity and the latter picked for flavour and body. All juice is settled and then fermented in French barriques. The wine goes through a full malolactic fermentation which helps achieve superior texture, mouth feel and a more refined, persistent flavour. Lees are stirred fortnightly by hand in barrel over a period of 12 months prior to blending, settling and bottling. The VR is a selection of the best 10 barrels that Pierro produces and is made only in only exceptional vintages.

Critic Scores

'Pierro always holds back a little of the current release chardonnay, for later release, which is great because it pushes you into a wine that's entering its ideal drinking zone, and the cellaring is done for you. This was always an outstanding wine, and it captures so much of the Pierro style, perhaps leaning more toward the modern evolution of the last 10 years. It’s crunchy and vibrant, with tremendous depth and intensity of fruit and a long, precise finish. This is classically Margaret River and delivered with polish.'

Lime, pear, biscuity clove and ginger oak, floral too. It’s powerful with plenty of flavour, pine-lime and melon, nutty and creamy with a honey gloss, a powdery and flinty grip to texture, bright citrus acidity, some savoury oak influence, with a soaring finish of superb length. It’s ripe but has freshness, balance and energy. So impressive. Margaret River power in full flight.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Pierro was established in 1979 by Dr. Michael Peterkin in Margaret River, one of Western Australia's premier cool-climate wine regions. The estate's vineyard sits on gravelly soils with clay substructure, ideal for producing structured Chardonnay with mineral precision. The winery focuses on meticulous canopy management and sustainable farming practices across its holdings. The 2022 vintage saw a warm growing season with excellent conditions for ripeness whilst maintaining acidity—ideal conditions that allowed the vineyard to achieve phenolic maturity without compromising the wine's freshness.

Vinification

Grapes were hand-picked at optimal ripeness and whole-bunch pressed to preserve delicate flavours. Fermentation occurred in French oak (a proportion of new) with indigenous yeasts, allowing natural complexity to develop. The wine spent approximately eleven months on lees with regular bâtonnage to build structure and textural richness. Malolactic fermentation was managed to preserve natural acidity and freshness. The final release was achieved through careful blending and minimal intervention.
