Tasting Notes

The nose offers up an abundance of wildflowers, quince and ripe, yellow pear. The palate is crisp, tangy and taut, showing Nashi pear and quince with a drizzle of lime. There is bright acid crunch right the way through.

Vineyard Cultivation

The Pizzini family are long-established growers in Victoria's King Valley, farming vineyards across the Whitfield and King River sub-districts at elevation in the alpine north-east. The family has Italian roots and built its reputation on northern-Italian varieties, with Pinot Grigio a natural fit for the cool nights and well-drained hillside soils. Fruit for this multi-vintage grigio is drawn from the family's King Valley plantings, farmed to retain the crisp natural acidity the altitude provides. Picking is timed comparatively early to keep the style dry and fresh rather than rich, favouring cool-climate definition, lime and pear character and a clean line.

Vinification

Grapes are pressed gently and the juice cold-settled before a cool fermentation in stainless steel to protect the delicate aromatics associated with grigio. The wine is made in a dry, unoaked style, kept on light lees for a short period to add a touch of texture and mouthfeel before being fined, filtered and bottled early to preserve freshness. Malolactic conversion is avoided so the crisp lemon and lime acidity remains the backbone of the wine. The aim is an approachable, food-friendly white showing apple, pear and citrus with a clean dry finish.

About this Wine

Victoria

The wine region of Victoria has the highest number of grape vines than any other state in Australia. It is home to over 600 wineries and well known regions such as Yarra valley, Heathcote, and Rutherglen. Victoria is situated in the southeastern corner of Australia where due to the location, the climate has a cool maritime influence and is known for their outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, along with producing Australia’s most famed dessert Muscat and Topaque wines.

There are a number of different terroir levels throughout the wine region of Victoria which leads to the production of different ranges of wines. In the southern region of Victoria, the vines are regulated by the cool winds of the Bass Strait. Central Victoria consists of mostly flat terrain that tends to be drier and warmer than the rest of Victoria, which results in more fruit concentrated wines. It may be surprising to note that Victoria is the third most productive wine region in Australia, seeing as it does not have as many areas suitable for viticulture, which has resulted in the cellar door culture of Victoria being concentrated with smaller, but more personal boutique wineries.
