Tasting Notes

Podere Salicutti Salicutti Brunello di Montalcino 2021 represents the triumphant return of one of Montalcino’s most esteemed boutique producers. After choosing not to produce the Brunello di Montalcino appellation in 2020, while still releasing their exceptional single-vineyard wines, Salicutti has delivered a remarkable 2021 vintage that exemplifies their commitment to quality and tradition.

Produced in limited quantities, this super limited wine is already earning accolades, including a prestigious 96-point rating from renowned critic Jeb Dunnuck. This score underscores the wine’s outstanding balance, depth, and finesse—a true icon of the Montalcino region celebrated for crafting some of Italy’s finest Brunellos.

The 2021 vintage benefitted from ideal growing conditions in Tuscany’s Montalcino area, renowned for its perfect microclimate that combines warm days and cool nights. These conditions allow the Sangiovese grapes to develop intense color, structured tannins, and a complex aromatic profile. Podere Salicutti’s meticulous vineyard management and traditional winemaking techniques result in a Brunello that boasts rich layers of red cherry, plum, dried herbs, and subtle hints of spice and earth.

This Brunello di Montalcino is a testament to the producer’s distinct terroir-driven style and refined craftsmanship. It is characterized by an elegant structure, vibrant acidity, and a long, persistent finish. With its aging potential, the 2021 Salicutti Brunello promises to evolve beautifully over the next decade, revealing even greater complexity with time.

Perfectly suited for collectors and connoisseurs seeking exclusive Italian wines, the Podere Salicutti Salicutti Brunello di Montalcino 2021 is a must-have for anyone passionate about authentic expressions of Montalcino’s finest terroirs. Its rarity combined with critical acclaim secures its place among the top-tier Brunello di Montalcino releases of recent vintages.

Critic Scores

After not producing the appellation Brunello Di Montalcino in 2020, while still bottling their single-vineyard wines, Salicutti is back in 2021 with a saturated ruby red 2021 Brunello Di Montalcino that’s lush and perfumed on the nose, with rosy florals, raspberry liqueur, mocha, and lavender. The palate is medium to full-bodied and polished, with bright acidity, elegant tannins, and a velvety texture that carries through the finish. It has terrific purity and leans more red-fruited in style. Drink 2026-2045.

A floral wine with violets, roses, red cherries and a touch of meat on the nose, Full-bodied, it shows weight, concentration, cherry stone flavors, velvety tannins and tense, juicy acidity. A supple finish despite its structure. Drinkable now, but best from 2027.

Bottled with a gray wax capsule, the Salicutti 2021 Brunello di Montalcino opens with dark, fruity aromas of black cherry, plum, spice and sweet earth that suggest notable richness and concentration. On the palate, however, the wine reveals pretty brightness and freshness, bringing vitality and energy to a medium- to full-bodied texture that feels balanced and lively rather than heavy. Blended from various estate parcels ranging from 420 meters to 500 meters above sea level, this expressive Brunello highlights Salicutti’s ability to combine depth with lift. This is a release of 6,500 bottles.

Vineyard Cultivation

Podere Salicutti is a boutique Brunello di Montalcino producer situated in central Tuscany, working from vineyards within the tightly defined DOCG zone south of Siena. Brunello di Montalcino is made exclusively from Brunello (Sangiovese Grosso), a clone adapted to the region's distinctive clay-limestone terroir and microclimate. The vineyard benefits from warm days and cool nights, ideal for Sangiovese's long ripening cycle. The 2021 vintage was cooler and damper than recent years, slowing ripening and concentrating aromatic complexity—conditions that often produce Brunello of particular perfume and fresh structure. Podere Salicutti's small-scale production reflects a commitment to quality over volume.

Vinification

Brunello's production is among Italy's most regulated: DOCG law mandates extended aging—minimum five years from harvest, with a minimum of two years in oak casks. Following harvest, grapes underwent fermentation in large wooden or concrete vessels, a process extracting colour and tannin from Sangiovese's notably thick skins. The wine then aged in large oak casks (often Slavonian oak, preferred for its neutral character), a patient process permitting gradual maturation and integration of the wine's structure. The 2021 vintage would have spent approximately two years in oak, with additional bottle-aging prior to release ensuring proper development. Unfiltered bottling preserved aromatic and structural complexity.
