Celebrated for producing wines of remarkable longevity and complexity, Romirasco embodies a rich legacy of traditional Barolo craftsmanship.

The 2016 vintage benefits from ideal growing conditions that enhanced the ripeness of the Nebbiolo grapes and perfected the tannic structure, making it a year noted for exceptional balance and depth in Barolo wines. Critic Scores

The dried flowers are so impressive on the nose here with lavender and lily, as well as raspberries and dried strawberries. Full-bodied, yet so tight and refined with fantastic precision and focus. Very reserved and tight now.

Similar to the neighbouring Cicala vineyard, Romirasco is slightly less steep with a bit more sand and magnesium in the soil. Nevertheless, the predominantly limestone-rich clay ultimately gives a forceful, robust and heady expression. It is more immediately scented than the Cicala with winter mint, cedar, sage blossom and rosemary emerging persuasively from the glass. Sumptuous and mouth filling, dark fruits coat copious chewy tannins that will need a few years to relax their assertive dry grip. This sees three months longer in large Slavonian casks than the estate’s Cicala and Colonnello.

This Barolo shows pretty sharpness and focus thanks to its robust layers of mineral and forest fruit. The Poderi Aldo Conterno 2016 Barolo Bussia Romirasco is a layered wine with power and 15% alcohol that you do definitely notice. The wine is fleshy and rich with rum spice and dark fruit, balsam and some end notes of spice, sandalwood and leather. The finish is a little hot, but the wine is ready for 10 years or more of careful cellar aging

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

The 2016 growing season in Piedmont began cool but recovered to deliver a ripe, balanced vintage. Romirasco's steep south-facing terraces and clay-limestone soil benefited from steady summer warmth and crucial autumn ripening. Careful canopy management throughout the season moderated excessive heat stress and maintained phenolic and acid balance. The vineyard's age and established root systems contributed depth and mineral complexity to the finished wine. Yields remained controlled through traditional pruning and selective harvesting.

Vinification

Romirasco 2016 grapes fermented in large wooden vats with native yeasts over an extended skin-contact period (24–28 days), developing the elegant but structured tannins expected from the vintage and terroir. Malolactic fermentation took place in large Slavonian oak casks. Approximately 36 months of wood maturation followed, allowing gradual integration and the development of secondary aromatics prior to bottling.
