This wine has more in common with a Brunello than it does a Rosso. Made with certified-organic fruit, Poggio di Sotto's 2018 Rosso di Montalcino is a very fine and smooth expression that caresses the senses. The bouquet is enlivened by forest berry, peat moss, lilac and wildflowers. The 2018 vintage is usually understated in personality, but this wine speaks of elegance and nuance. It's just stunning.

In the lighter 2018 vintage, Rosso achieves great suppleness in the southern exposure of Castelnuovo dell'Abate, sheltered by the Amiata mountain. Based on 100% Sangiovese Grosso with a yield of around 3.5 tons per hectare, this Rosso is fermented spontaneously in 70hL oak casks. After the malolactic fermentation, the wine ages for two years in 30 hL oak casks, plus an additional six months in bottle. The plush fruit is vibrant, supported by complex spices. It's a wine focused on grace, with yellow fruit, smoky woodland notes, liquorice, roasted nuts and a balsamic hint. The palate is silky and lifted by elegant acidity. Perfect balance and impressive drinkability.

A mix of cranberry and plum sauce gains freshness through the addition of fresh mint and flowery undergrowth as the 2018 Rosso di Montalcino opens in the glass. The textures here are simply stunning, as this comes across as almost juicy yet also so pure, and with a balanced sweetness to its red fruits and spices that keeps you coming back for more. The 2018 has really come into its own and is definitely one of the most successful Rossos of the vintage.

Vineyard Cultivation

This younger expression comes from the same Sangiovese vineyards surrounding Montalcino in Tuscany, benefiting from similar calcareous soils at elevation. The 2018 growing season saw warmer conditions with good late-summer ripeness, producing fresher fruit expression than the more austere Brunello reserve. Rosso di Montalcino is permitted to include a higher proportion of younger vines and lesser parcels, allowing the producer to showcase terroir with earlier accessibility than the formal Brunello DOCG designation requires.

Vinification

Rosso di Montalcino permits a more flexible vinification than Brunello. Sangiovese undergoes shorter maceration—typically 10–15 days—to preserve bright fruit characters. Oak maturation is less stringent; producers may use large neutral botti or a portion of French oak for 10–12 months before bottling. This lighter touch on oak and tannin management produces wines drinking well within 2–3 years whilst retaining Tuscan structure and character.

About this Wine

Tuscany

Tuscany is the oldest wine region in Italy, with a long history dating back over 2700 years. The region is on the Western coast of Italy, stretching from the coastline of the Tyrrhenian Sea all the way to the Apennine mountains, with the majority of the region being quite hilly.

Contributing to around 6% of Italy's total wine output, Tuscany is the third most planted region, but only the eight biggest producer. Much of this can be attributed to the hilly terroir and poor soils leading to lower yields, but generally higher quality wines. The region produces far more red than white wine, and is responsible for two of the most famous Italian red wines, Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino.

Chianti was first classified in 1716, and the region of Tuscany now has 29 DOC and 7 DOCG classifications. In the 1970s 'Super Tuscan' wines emerged of supreme quality, commanding very high prices. Although they were initially produced outside the DOC or DOCG zones, most of the regions have since been classified, though some producers still opt to use the simpler and less restrictive IGT labelling.

The famous red wine Chianti is based on the the Sangiovese variety, though is most commonly blended with Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon. The blending of multiple grapes is common, even Bordeaux blends can be found. White wines produced include Vermentino, Vernaccia, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay.
