Tasting Notes

Powell & Son Loechel Shiraz 2017 showcases the depth, richness and character of premium Barossa Shiraz. Crafted by father-and-son winemakers Dave and Callum Powell, it reflects generations of Barossa Valley winemaking experience, with a focus on old-vine vineyards and expressive, site-driven fruit.

Rich flavours of blackberry, plum and blueberry unfold across the palate, layered with pepper, warming spice and savoury complexity. Supple tannins provide balance and structure, while the generous, polished finish highlights the quality of the fruit and the careful winemaking behind this distinguished Australian red wine.

Sourced from a premium private cellar, this 2017 Barossa Shiraz is an elegant choice for collectors and enthusiasts seeking full-bodied Australian wine with depth and character. Pair it with grilled steak, roast lamb, barbecue dishes or a hearty Sunday roast.

Critic Scores

A complex and very spicy nose with roasted meat and an array of red and dark berries. The palate has such silky tannins that flow like ribbons with a ripe red-fruit core of flavor. Elegant feel to the finish. Drink or hold.

Despite the relatively cool climes of the Eden Valley and the lift of red fruit they provide, this is a big, rich wine with quite a lot of oak influence. Strawberry and cherry fruit is ensconced in mint chocolatey barrel characters. The palate is equally oak-driven, particularly on the finish. But there's a silkiness and freshness to the fruit, and tannins are textural and well-structured. This is destined for the cellar and should age nicely. Drink 2022–2040. Christina Pickard

About this Wine

Shiraz

Bold and full-bodied, Shiraz delivers rich dark fruit flavours of blackberry, plum, and black cherry, layered with black pepper, clove, and subtle smoke. Firm tannins and a velvety texture give it real structure, often rounded out by notes of chocolate and vanilla from oak ageing. A versatile pairing partner for grilled meats and hearty dishes, it's one of Australia's most planted red varieties

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
