Tasting Notes

Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Muncagota Riserva 2017 embodies the essence of one of the most prestigious vineyards in the Barbaresco region. Since 1967, Muncagota has been cultivated as a single-vineyard site, renowned for its exceptional terroir characterized by sand-poor soils that impart focused fruit concentration and firm, refined tannins. This Riserva stands as a testament to the elite quality that Produttori del Barbaresco consistently delivers.

Crafted exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes grown in this renowned cru, the 2017 vintage captures the nuanced elegance and structured complexity typical of Barbaresco wines. The region is celebrated for producing expressive wines with a balance of power and finesse, making each sip a journey through Piedmont's rich viticultural heritage.

This Barbaresco Muncagota Riserva is sourced from a premium private cellar, ensuring optimal aging and preservation of the wine’s vibrant character. It reveals a bouquet of red cherry, wild berries, and subtle floral notes, harmoniously layered with hints of licorice, spice, and earthy undertones. The palate delivers a well-defined structure supported by firm tannins and bright acidity, promising excellent aging potential and a rewarding drinking experience.

Experts regard Muncagota as one of Produttori del Barbaresco’s elite crus, making this Riserva a prized selection for collectors and connoisseurs alike. Its distinctive minerality and precise fruit profile reflect the unique microclimate and soil composition of the vineyard, offering a true expression of terroir-driven winemaking.

Rich in history and crafted with meticulous care, the 2017 Barbaresco Muncagota Riserva epitomizes refined Italian craftsmanship. It pairs beautifully with traditional Piedmontese cuisine, such as truffle dishes, roasted meats, and aged cheeses, elevating any dining experience.

Critic Scores

Offers a bright, pure expression of cherry, strawberry, rose and grassy aromas and flavors underscored by a vein of minerality, with tannins that flex their muscles on the long finish. Intense but balanced, with tension that bodes well for future evolution. Best from 2026 through 2043.

The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota plays some of its best cards in terms of texture, offering silky tannins, firmness and a long-lasting veil of fruit flavors. Cassis, wild cherry, camphor ash, spice and iron ore are aromatic protagonists. This wine is lean and compact but very linear and focused. Like the other Riservas in this group of new releases, the wine is fermented in steel and aged in large oak casks for 32 months.

The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is one of the lighter wines in this range. Floral and medium in body, the 2017 gives the impression of a wine that will open earlier than some of the others. It, too, has pretty imposing tannins though, so a few years in bottle are advisable. Crushed flowers, sweet red cherry, mint and white pepper linger.

Vineyard Cultivation

Muncagota represents another significant vineyard within Produttori del Barbaresco's cooperative holdings in Barbaresco. The site features calcareous marl soils characteristic of the region's finest terroirs, contributing mineral definition and structural complexity. The 2017 vintage provided warm, sunny ripening conditions across Piedmont, with good water balance and extended hang time allowing Nebbiolo phenolic maturation. The vineyard's position within Barbaresco's prime zone, combined with the warm season, produced grapes of excellent concentration. Produttori del Barbaresco's member families employed careful canopy management and selective harvesting to ensure optimal fruit quality for this single-vineyard Riserva release.

Vinification

The 2017 Muncagota Riserva followed traditional Barbaresco methods: hand-harvested Nebbiolo was destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled tanks with native yeast over approximately four weeks of maceration. The warm vintage provided concentrated juice, managed through precise fermentation temperature control. Malolactic fermentation progressed naturally in large, neutral oak vessels after primary fermentation completion. The wine then spent three years in traditional large botti, the extended élevage integrating the vintage's natural structure and developing secondary complexity. Minimal new oak and traditional élevage techniques preserve Nebbiolo's essence and terroir character.
