Tasting Notes

Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Rio Sordo Riserva 2017 is a distinguished expression of the prestigious Barbaresco appellation, showcasing the elegance and complexity that have made this region renowned worldwide. Crafted from carefully selected grapes in a premium private cellar, this Riserva embodies the unique terroir of Rio Sordo, delivering a refined and balanced wine experience.

Entering its optimal drinking window, the 2017 vintage offers immediate pleasure while promising further development over the next 5 to 10 years, peaking beautifully from 2025 onwards. Unlike wines that require decades of aging, this Riserva presents a harmonious profile that is rich yet vibrant, avoiding any sense of overripeness or flabbiness. It strikes a perfect balance by combining structure and finesse, characteristic of Barbaresco’s Nebbiolo grapes.

On the palate, expect layers of dark cherry, wild berry, and subtle floral notes intertwined with hints of spice, earthy undertones, and refined tannins. The 2017 vintage benefits from favorable climatic conditions in Piedmont, ensuring ripe, healthy fruit and excellent phenolic maturity. These attributes contribute to the wine’s smooth texture and persistent finish.

This Riserva is an exemplary showcase of traditional Barbaresco craftsmanship, highlighting the region’s potential to produce wines that are both approachable in youth and capable of graceful evolution. Whether paired with classic Piedmontese cuisine or enjoyed on its own, the Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Rio Sordo Riserva 2017 stands out as a premier choice for lovers of elegant Italian red wines.

Critic Scores

The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo (with 10,000 bottles released) has a mineral character and a sleek, firm approach that gives this wine its special identity. The wine is polished, almost glossy in texture with blackcurrant, plum and wild rose, and the tannins are gripping, although the Rio Sordo sports a lean to medium-rich density overall.

Produttori del Barbaresco has been hitting it out of the ballpark these past years with a string of excellent vintages that resulted in the production of their entire line of Riservas. However, that good momentum comes to an end because the Riservas were not made in 2018. That vintage saw all the fruit blended into one non-MGA Barbaresco. And with the 2017 Riservas reviewed here, you might find these bottles hard to find. Production was 30% lower in this growing season because of a very careful fruit selection process. In fact, Aldo Vacca calls 2017 a "roller coaster vintage with frost, then hail, then a summer drought."

Delivers depth and velvety texture, which are a perfect foil for the saturated cherry and raspberry fruit flavors. Underlined by mineral and spice notes, this is harmonious and long, with a mineral aftertaste. Feels approachable now, but this has structure and will age beautifully. Best from 2025 through 2043.

The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo shows the natural intensity of the year, and yet retains a good bit of the aromatic lift that is so typical of Nebbiolo at its best. Silky, perfumed and poised, the Rio Sordo is impressive in this tasting. Spice and floral notes lift a core of red-toned fruit in this mid-weight yet packed Barbaresco from the Produttori. This has very fine potential.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Rio Sordo represents one of Barbaresco's officially recognised vineyard crus, cultivated within Produttori del Barbaresco's collective portfolio of fifty-plus member families. The vineyard occupies soils of Tortonian calcareous marl and chalk, characteristic of Barbaresco's terroir and contributing mineral precision to Nebbiolo expression. The cooperative's integrated viticultural approach across 120 hectares emphasises sustainable practices and site-specific management. The 2017 growing season brought moderate conditions to Piedmont with optimal fruit maturation, producing Nebbiolo with balanced structure, good acidity retention, and aromatic complexity suited to Riserva classification.

Vinification

Rio Sordo's 2017 harvest was processed through Produttori del Barbaresco's established protocols: Nebbiolo grapes destemmed for fermentation using naturally occurring yeasts in temperature-managed environments. Extended maceration on skins extracted the full tannin framework and colour compounds. Malolactic fermentation proceeded within large wooden tini barrels over a minimum two-year period, extended significantly for Riserva status to achieve greater structural integration. The winemaking approach prioritises terroir expression through the use of neutral or minimally-impact wood, allowing Rio Sordo's vineyard character to define the wine's development and complexity.
