Tasting Notes

Lowburn, Central Otago, NZ

From the sunlit slopes of Lowburn, this Pinot overdelivers with vibrant cherry, redcurrant and wild thyme aromas, laced with rose petal and spice. A touch of whole bunch adds savoury lift and earthy intrigue, while fine, silky tannins carry bright red fruit and subtle French oak finesse.

Hand-harvested, gently plunged, and aged 12 months in French barriques (25% new), it’s unfiltered for purity and texture. Elegant yet energetic, this Pinot captures Central Otago’s alpine freshness and mineral depth.

Pair with: Duck, mushroom risotto or roast beet salad.

Critic Scores

It's elegantly composed with seductive complexity, showing dark plum, sweet strawberry, olive, clove, and toasted almond nuances on the nose. The palate displays a silky flow, a supple texture, and finely integrated tannins, making it splendidly harmonious and structured with a long, refined finish.

A very attractive bouquet with a Central Otago savoury dried herb and spice quality framing the central aromas of red and dark red cherry, a stony mineral quality, raspberry and spiced plums then a layer of wood spice and leesy smoke. Dry, textured with fine through firm tannins and acidity framing core fruit flavours with taut and youthful mouthfeel. Best drinking from 2029 through 2034+.

Vineyard Cultivation

Red Hut is a Central Otago Pinot Noir label made by Corey Ryan, the former chief winemaker at Villa Maria with some three decades of experience, named New Zealand Winemaker of the Year in 2007. The wine is sourced from the Lowburn area of Central Otago, a district on the Cromwell Basin whose glacial, schist-derived and stony soils and hot days with cold nights give Pinot Noir concentrated dark fruit and firm natural acidity. The 2025 is a current release positioned as excellent value Central Otago Pinot. The region's arid, continental climate and low-vigour soils naturally restrict yields and build the savoury dried-herb, spice and stony mineral character that frames the wine's red and dark cherry fruit.

Vinification

The wine is made in a structured Central Otago style, with fruit fermented to build fine through firm tannins and a taut, youthful mouthfeel. Fermentation in small batches, likely with a portion of whole bunches, precedes maturation in French oak that contributes wood spice and a leesy, smoky nuance noted by critics. Malolactic fermentation and time in barrel round the wine while preserving its dry, textured structure and bright acidity. The style favours savoury complexity and cellaring potential, with critics suggesting best drinking from around 2029. Precise whole-bunch, oak and elevage figures for the 2025 are unconfirmed.
