Tasting Notes

Renato Ratti Conca Barolo 2017 stands as a testament to the art of Italian winemaking, hailing from the prestigious Conca vineyard—one of the oldest and most exclusive Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive (MGAs) within the Barolo appellation. This vineyard's unique terroir and exceptional microclimate impart remarkable depth, complexity, and longevity to the wine, making it a true expression of Piedmont’s noble Nebbiolo grape.

The 2017 vintage captures both tradition and precision, delivering a wine with vibrant aromatics and impressive structure. On the palate, it offers an elegant balance of ripe dark cherries and plums, underscored by delicate floral hints, earthy nuances, and subtle spice. Fine-grained tannins provide a graceful backbone, promising continued evolution and refinement over time. Renato Ratti’s expert craftsmanship is evident in this layered, complex Barolo, which unfolds beautifully with each sip.

Critically acclaimed, the Conca Barolo 2017 earned a remarkable 97 points from James Suckling, highlighting its superior quality and distinctive character. This bottle is sourced from a premium private cellar, ensuring its authenticity and provenance—qualities that elevate it as a prized selection for any wine collection.

The Barolo region in Piedmont is renowned for producing powerful yet refined wines that showcase the limestone-rich soils and rolling hills characteristic of this celebrated area. The 2017 vintage benefited from ideal weather conditions, resulting in wines with exceptional balance, lively aromatics, and strong aging potential.

With its prestigious pedigree and complex profile, Renato Ratti Conca Barolo 2017 embodies the soul of Barolo and the dedication to excellence that defines this historic estate. This wine delivers a memorable tasting experience, suited for those who appreciate the finest Italian reds.

Critic Scores

Very floral with lavender, violets and dark fruit. Medium-to full-bodied with tannins that build on the palate, particularly the middle palate. Very long and intense. Transparent fruit and evident terroir here. Try after 2025.

Conca is not favoured by warm vintages but performs a bit better than nearby Arborina in the cooler years. Nevertheless, this 2017 shows red fruits, buttery notes, pencil lead and Pinot-like grace. Quite light in body, it has a silky texture and moderate acidity. This is a super-refined wine lacking a bit of the power and concentration expected from a Barolo. Its liquorice finish enhances the glass.

Vineyard Cultivation

Renato Ratti, established in 1971, is among Barolo's most respected traditional producers. The Conca vineyard, situated in the heart of Barolo's terroir, benefits from south-facing exposure and complex soils blending calcareous marls with clay. The estate practices meticulous canopy management to ensure optimal ripening of Nebbiolo. The 2017 vintage presented moderate conditions in Piedmont, with warm spring and summer, necessitating careful harvest timing to balance phenolic maturity with acidity preservation—a hallmark of Ratti's classical approach.

Vinification

Handpicked Nebbiolo grapes undergo a traditional fermentation in large oak and concrete vessels, preserving the variety's delicate tannin structure. Maceration typically extends 25–30 days to extract colour and complexity without excessive astringency. The wine is aged for at least three years in large cask and bottle before release, respecting Barolo's regulatory requirements whilst allowing the vintage's inherent characteristics to emerge. Minimal intervention philosophy guides the cellar work.
