Tasting Notes

Roberto Voerzio La Serra Barolo 2010 is a masterful expression of Barolo’s noble tradition combined with modern precision. Crafted by the acclaimed winemaker Roberto Voerzio, this wine embodies the high-altitude elegance of the La Serra vineyard, capturing a unique tension between refined structure and vibrant intensity. The 2010 vintage, celebrated for its classical balance and exceptional ripeness, provides an ideal foundation for this wine’s harmonious profile.

From a premium private cellar, this release is considered by many enthusiasts as arguably the most complete La Serra Voerzio has ever produced. Rich layers of dark cherry, wild herbs, and delicate floral notes unfold gracefully on the nose, while the palate offers firm yet silky tannins, lively acidity, and a lingering finish that reflects the meticulous craftsmanship behind its creation.

Roberto Voerzio’s modernist approach is evident in the wine’s precise structure and clarity, emphasizing purity and expression without sacrificing the traditional Barolo character. Each sip reveals the terroir’s distinctive minerality and the complexity derived from La Serra’s prized hillside location.

As one of Piedmont’s flagship bottlings, this 2010 La Serra Barolo stands as a testament to both the vintage's extraordinary quality and Voerzio’s dedication to excellence. It is a rare opportunity to experience a wine that bridges tradition and innovation with unmatched finesse.

Critic Scores

A red with lovely balance of fruit and ultra-fine tannins. Full body, with strawberry, spice and chocolate character. Chewy finish. This is tight and powerful. Pure. Needs time to soften.

Firm tannins give the 2010 Barolo La Serra much of its energy and cut. A brilliant wine, the 2010 bursts from the glass with freshly cut flowers, mint, sweet spices and licorice. As always La Serra has a certain tannic spine that is impossible to miss. In 2010 La Serra is striking. Sweet rose petals, red berries, mint and crushed rocks reappear on the bright, chiseled finish. This is a fabulous La Serra.

The 2010 Barolo La Serra shows a broader approach to its aromatic delivery with a generous portion of red fruit, blackberry and a touch of exotic spice. Like the Cerequio, the wine shows impressive grip and structure that goes above and beyond many of the other wines made in this delicate vintage. Barolo La Serra is focused and bright and should hold many long years.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Roberto Voerzio's La Serra vineyard produced expressive Nebbiolo in 2010, a year marked by moderate warmth and good phenolic maturity across Piedmont. The vineyard's south-east exposure and limestone-rich soils proved ideally suited to 2010's conditions, yielding fruit with balance between ripe character and acidity. Voerzio's fastidious management of the canopy and vintage-specific decisions around ripeness assessments ensured optimal fruit quality. This vintage shows the consistent quality Voerzio's meticulous viticulture affords.

Vinification

The 2010 received Voerzio's standard temperature-controlled fermentation in large-format vessels with extended maceration of approximately 30 days. Careful tannin extraction was followed by patient barrel-ageing (30+ months in large and medium oak) to achieve the wine's signature balance. The vintage's moderate warmth and natural acidity shaped a wine with grace and structure—neither excessive power nor undue austerity—reflecting both vintage character and Voerzio's refined philosophy.

About this Wine

Piedmont

Piedmont (Piemonte in Italian) is probably the finest wine region in all of Italy, and has laid claim to this since Roman times. It has a continental climate influenced by the surrounding Alps and Ligurian Apennines, and is located in the north-west of Italy, bordering both France and Switzerland.

Piedmont has only 1% of the total vineyards of Bordeaux and 15% that of Burgundy. So while a top Chateaux may produce upwards of 35,000 cases a year, leading Barolo producers will often make only 800 cases. More than half of its vineyards are registered with DOC designations and many are in the Apennine or Alpine foothills, from 300-600m above sea level. Most of the wines are produced by smaller family estates rather than larger holdings.

Piedmont has 46 different DOC and four DOCG regions, and produces the largest number of well known, world-recognized, prize-winning wines. The most famous would have to be Barolo or Barbaresco, whose power comes from the Nebbiolo grape variety. The most widely planted red variety is Barbera although Dolcetto, Muscat, Shiraz and Bonarda are also produced.

The white variety most well known is Moscato, which is often made into frizzante (bubbly) wines known as Asti. Cortese is made into the popular Gavi wines, and smaller amounts of Chardonnay and high quality Sparkling are also produced in the far north of Piedmont.
