Sakurao Single Malt is the flagship unpeated expression from Sakurao Distillery in Hiroshima, Japan — the core statement of the relaunched craft distillery's house style. The spirit is produced from malted barley in custom-built copper pot stills, using Hiroshima's naturally soft water drawn from local sources — a water profile associated with the clean, elegant character typical of soft-water whisky production. The single malt is matured in a combination of new American oak, sherry, and bourbon casks, with selected barrels transferred to mizunara (Japanese oak) casks for additional character development — mizunara contributing notes of sandalwood, oriental spice, and incense characteristic of Japanese oak. Bottled at 43% ABV.

Sakurao Brewery and Distillery is based in Hiroshima Prefecture in Japan's Chugoku region — the company traces its origins to 1918 as Chugoku Shurui Jozo, initially producing sake, shochu, and mirin. Whisky production began at the site as early as 1938 and continued until 1989. In 2017, as a centenary project, the company invested in a new craft distillery under the Sakurao name, installing custom-built copper pot stills and beginning distillation in January 2018. The first single malt releases appeared in July 2021. The distillery benefits from Hiroshima's soft water, which is considered particularly well suited to whisky production.
