Critic Scores

This is fabulous. Racy, flavoursome, varietal too. Chalky acidity and the tiniest touch of spice. The palate is compelling, long with perfect harmony; it has weight without overt fruitiness, which is always magic. Lovely citrus line. High class.

Vineyard Cultivation

Silkman Wines is the Hunter Valley label of Liz and Shaun Silkman, with Liz - Halliday Winemaker of the Year for 2025 - as chief winemaker. This single-vineyard Semillon comes from the dry-grown Blackberry vineyard, which Liz has worked with for twenty vintages by 2023. The site is planted on decomposed granite fragments over fine sandy loam, unusual soils that lend the wine drive and pebbly texture. The Hunter is a warm, humid maritime region where Semillon is picked early at low baume to capture zesty citrus fruit and taut natural acidity. Dry-grown, low-vigour vines concentrate the delicate, pristine fruit that defines this classic yet vibrant expression.

Vinification

Fruit was hand-picked early to preserve the low alcohol and searing natural acidity that underpin ageworthy Hunter Semillon. Grapes were whole-bunch pressed and only the free-run and lightest fractions taken, then cool-fermented in stainless steel to protect the pristine, delicate character of the vineyard. The wine was made bone-dry with no malolactic fermentation and no oak, so nothing masks the lemony fruit and mineral, pebbly texture. It was bottled early to retain freshness, showing zesty citrus and a long, acid-driven core that is delicious young yet built for extended cellaring. Precise picking baume and press figures for the 2023 NEEDS VERIFICATION.

Austria's signature white grape, known for its peppery spice, citrus character, and food-friendly acidity.

New South Wales

Home to 14 official wine regions, New South Wales offers a diverse and wide ranging expanse to produce wines that appeal to every palate.
From Australia’s oldest continuous wine region – the famous Hunter Valley – to exciting new cool climate regions such as Orange, the Southern Highlands and Tumbarumba, these regions can be found to produce some of the best Australian Wine around. Recognised as the second largest wine producing state in Australia, New South Wales is also the most populous state with its wine consumption far outpacing the region's wine production. Although the Hunter Valley region is well known, the majority of wineries are located along the Murray and Darling Rivers (in the south-east of the state) which supplies water for many of the regions wineries.
Other regions within New South Wales includes the Canberra District, Cowra, Gundagai, Hastings River, Hilltops, Mudgee, New England, Perricoota, Riverina and the Shoalhaven Coast.
