Critic Scores

This is a magnificent wine, displaying the complexity and detail found only in the world's finest chardonnays. Yet, compared to those, it's a steal. Bright, expansive, lemony fruit is layered with accents of almonds, oatmeal and nougat. No single element dominates, with the intense fruit, quality oak, and clean sulfide nuances seamlessly integrated. The filigree acidity is exquisitely fine and intricate, channelling the flavours through the length of the wine. It is one of Australia's finest chardonnays – long, pure, ageworthy and memorable.

Light-to-mid yellow colour; lightly toasted bread and cashewnut aromas, the palate soft and easygoing with mild but balanced acidity moving into a seamless finish. A wine of great purity and refinement, which drinks well now and promises to age superbly

Vineyard Cultivation

Silkman Wines is the family label of Liz and Shaun Silkman, based in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales, where Liz is chief winemaker at First Creek and was named Halliday Winemaker of the Year for 2025. SILK sits at the top of the range, a barrel selection from the finest parcels of the reserve Chardonnay. Hunter Valley Chardonnay is grown on a mix of red volcanic and sandy alluvial soils around Pokolbin, in a warm, humid maritime climate where early ripening and careful canopy management are essential. The 2017 vintage is now offered as an aged release from the winery's cellars, showing the layered development that rewards patient bottle age.

Vinification

SILK is a selection of the top two barrels from the reserve Chardonnay parcel, in this case matured in one-year-old French oak puncheons to add texture without dominating the fruit. Grapes were whole-bunch pressed and barrel-fermented, with the wine building complexity from lees contact and gentle, worked sulphide and matchstick characters in the reductive, Meursault-inflected style noted by reviewers. Malolactic fermentation was likely partial to retain the driving acidity and restraint. After extended barrel maturation the finest barrels were selected and the wine held in bottle at the winery, released with several years of age. Exact oak, lees and malolactic details for the 2017 NEEDS VERIFICATION.

New South Wales

Home to 14 official wine regions, New South Wales offers a diverse and wide ranging expanse to produce wines that appeal to every palate.
From Australia’s oldest continuous wine region – the famous Hunter Valley – to exciting new cool climate regions such as Orange, the Southern Highlands and Tumbarumba, these regions can be found to produce some of the best Australian Wine around. Recognised as the second largest wine producing state in Australia, New South Wales is also the most populous state with its wine consumption far outpacing the region's wine production. Although the Hunter Valley region is well known, the majority of wineries are located along the Murray and Darling Rivers (in the south-east of the state) which supplies water for many of the regions wineries.
Other regions within New South Wales includes the Canberra District, Cowra, Gundagai, Hastings River, Hilltops, Mudgee, New England, Perricoota, Riverina and the Shoalhaven Coast.
