St Hallett has been part of the Barossa’s wine story since 1975, with Old Block built around precious old-vine Shiraz. Its heritage vineyards are a powerful expression of the Barossa’s generations-old tradition of producing richly flavoured, age-worthy reds.

Deep blackberry, plum and dark chocolate flavours mingle with cracked pepper, spice and savoury earth, wrapped in polished tannins. Rich but beautifully balanced, it’s made for steak, lamb, barbecue or a special Sunday roast.

Tasting Notes

St Hallett Old Block Shiraz 2018 is a distinguished Barossa Valley Shiraz, crafted from precious old-vine vineyards and shaped by St Hallett’s enduring role in the region’s wine story since 1975. This premium Australian red captures the richly flavoured, age-worthy character for which the Barossa is renowned.

Generous aromas lead to layers of deep blackberry, ripe plum and dark chocolate, complemented by cracked pepper, warming spice and savoury earth. Rich and full-bodied yet beautifully balanced, the wine is framed by polished tannins and a refined, lingering finish.

A superb expression of Barossa Shiraz, Old Block 2018 is an elegant choice for grilled steak, roast lamb, smoky barbecue dishes and a special Sunday roast. Sourced from a premium private cellar, this exceptional fine Australian red is a distinguished addition to any wine collection.

Critic Scores

The 2018 Old Block Shiraz is, as usual, a blend of two areas within the Barossa Zone: Barossa Valley (66%) and Eden Valley (34%). From my tastings over the years, I am really attracted to the 2018 vintage in the Barossa. Fruit has an easy gloss, a polish and a concentration that makes it so exciting to drink in its youth, but you know these wines will age, because they are possessed of supreme structure and shape. So, the 2018 Old Block is supple, almost slinky, medium-bodied, red-fruited, almost velvet, but light on its feet. There are suggestions of Earl Grey tea, graphite and fennel from Eden and a hint of red dirt and meaty body and density from Barossa, and it's just enough to create magic in the mouth. This is superb. Truly awesome.

About this Wine

Shiraz

Bold and full-bodied, Shiraz delivers rich dark fruit flavours of blackberry, plum, and black cherry, layered with black pepper, clove, and subtle smoke. Firm tannins and a velvety texture give it real structure, often rounded out by notes of chocolate and vanilla from oak ageing. A versatile pairing partner for grilled meats and hearty dishes, it's one of Australia's most planted red varieties

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
