Tasting Notes

St Hallett Old Block Shiraz 2019 is a distinguished Barossa Valley Shiraz shaped by generations of winemaking heritage. Since 1975, St Hallett has been part of the Barossa’s celebrated wine story, with Old Block built around precious old-vine Shiraz and the region’s renowned tradition of producing richly flavoured, age-worthy red wines.

Deep blackberry and ripe plum flavours lead into layers of dark chocolate, cracked pepper, warming spice and savoury earth. Polished tannins provide structure, balance and impressive length, bringing refinement to the wine’s generous richness and contributing to an elegant, lingering finish.

Sourced from a premium private cellar, this 2019 release is a compelling expression of Barossa Shiraz and old-vine character. Enjoy it with steak, roast lamb, barbecue dishes or a special Sunday roast. It is beautifully approachable now, while careful cellaring may allow its depth and complexity to develop further.

Critic Scores

Very deep purple-red colour, young for its years, and the bouquet still has a lot of fresh vanilla/coconut oak showing, this quickly subsides to make room for blackberry and cassis aromas, touches of tar and ironstone, while the palate is very firm with mouth-coating tannins. Concentrated fruitcake and brandied cherries. It all bodes well for the future: it will reward many years of cellaring.

Dark, opaque and inky in the glass. Opulent aromas of stewed plum, mocha, dark chocolate, mulberry, graphite, sweet spice and panforte. Plush, full flavoured and decadently mouth-filling. The epitome of the iron fist in the velvet glove. Lusciously dark fruit driven, with fabulous shape and presence. Firm, structured tannins and punchy acidity keeps everything fresh, textured and bright. A true Barossa beauty

Dark and brooding aromas of dusty cedar and blackberry first up, followed by liquorice root, meat and iodine. Everything clicks into place with air, along with some emergent coal and cut leather. The palate is full bodied with a good burst of intensity in the form of blackberry, leather, mocha, and earth underpinned by savoury oak notes. Despite its dark aesthetic, it’s not weighty through the palate. A fine weave of mocha laced tannins work with good acidity to a long poised finish carrying black fruits and coal. Good complexity, finesse and length on show.

About this Wine

Shiraz

Bold and full-bodied, Shiraz delivers rich dark fruit flavours of blackberry, plum, and black cherry, layered with black pepper, clove, and subtle smoke. Firm tannins and a velvety texture give it real structure, often rounded out by notes of chocolate and vanilla from oak ageing. A versatile pairing partner for grilled meats and hearty dishes, it's one of Australia's most planted red varieties

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
