Tasting Notes

Tenuta Luce 'Lux Vitis' 2022 presents an exceptional expression of Tuscany’s illustrious winemaking heritage, expertly combining tradition and modern innovation. Originating from the celebrated Montalcino region, this wine benefits from a unique terroir characterized by well-drained soils and optimal sun exposure, conditions that foster the perfect ripening of both Bordeaux varietals and indigenous Italian grapes.

Crafted by Luce, a prestigious collaboration between the historic Frescobaldi family—whose viticultural legacy spans over 700 years—and Napa Valley icon Robert Mondavi, Lux Vitis reflects the seamless blend of Old World craftsmanship and contemporary winemaking techniques. Planted in 2004, the vineyard primarily features Cabernet Sauvignon with a subtle but significant inclusion of Sangiovese, creating a distinctive and rare Tuscan blend that challenges traditional regional profiles.

The 2022 vintage reveals a deep, layered complexity, with rich aromas of ripe dark fruits complemented by nuanced spice notes and refined tannins. This wine’s structure and harmony underscore the attentive viticultural care and the remarkable terroir of Montalcino, enhancing its depth, elegance, and potential for graceful aging.

Critic Scores

Compact and focused, this medium- to full-bodied red presents dark fruit accompanied by notes of mocha, chocolate nibs, licorice and graphite. The palate is structured yet polished, showing a seamless, velvety texture with hints of wet stone. Earthy and spiced, it is beautifully composed and finishes long and even. Drink or hold.

Packaged in its explosive, intergalactic-themed label, the Tenuta Luce 2022 Lux Vitis places Cabernet Sauvignon firmly in the lead, with Sangiovese in a supporting role, resulting in a darkly concentrated and generous expression. Blackberry preserves, dark plum and blackcurrant define the bouquet, while well-judged ripeness and lively tension keep the wine from tipping into excess, despite the warm vintage. Aged in 100% new French oak, the sweet chalk-tinged tannins and seductive polish make this what Italians call a "ruffiano" wine, an irresistibly charming style built for immediate appeal. - Monica Larner
