Vineyard Cultivation

The Hare and the Tortoise is a value-focused exclusive label whose Pinot Noir is drawn from Lower and Upper Yarra Valley fruit in Victoria. The Yarra Valley is a cool-climate region long regarded as one of Australia's benchmark homes for Pinot Noir, its combination of soil, altitude and climate giving lifted, perfumed reds. The wine is made by Tim Shand, an experienced Yarra winemaker. Sourcing across both the warmer lower valley and the cooler upper valley broadens the blend, balancing ripe red fruit with the region's characteristic freshness and fine tannin. The 2024 fruit was picked to retain the pretty, slightly earthy Yarra Pinot character the wine is known for.

Vinification

Fruit from the Lower and Upper Yarra Valley was harvested and brought together for fermentation, typically destemmed with the option of some whole bunches for lift and structure. Fermentation with regular gentle plunging extracts colour and fine tannin without heaviness, after which the wine is pressed and matured in French oak, a modest portion new, to frame rather than dominate the fruit. Malolactic fermentation softens the acidity, and the wine is bottled to show lifted red fruit, a hint of earthiness and balanced acid and tannin. Exact whole-bunch and oak figures for this vintage NEED VERIFICATION.

About this Wine

Pinot Noir

A thin-skinned red grape known for its light body, red fruit character, and sensitivity to terroir, grown around the world.

Victoria

The wine region of Victoria has the highest number of grape vines than any other state in Australia. It is home to over 600 wineries and well known regions such as Yarra valley, Heathcote, and Rutherglen. Victoria is situated in the southeastern corner of Australia where due to the location, the climate has a cool maritime influence and is known for their outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, along with producing Australia’s most famed dessert Muscat and Topaque wines.

There are a number of different terroir levels throughout the wine region of Victoria which leads to the production of different ranges of wines. In the southern region of Victoria, the vines are regulated by the cool winds of the Bass Strait. Central Victoria consists of mostly flat terrain that tends to be drier and warmer than the rest of Victoria, which results in more fruit concentrated wines. It may be surprising to note that Victoria is the third most productive wine region in Australia, seeing as it does not have as many areas suitable for viticulture, which has resulted in the cellar door culture of Victoria being concentrated with smaller, but more personal boutique wineries.
