Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

The Hero is a modern, minimal-intervention Australian range, hand-crafted from bought-in premium fruit and bottled with no added sulphur. This preservative-free Pinot Noir is built as a consistent house style rather than a single-vintage wine, which is why it carries a non-vintage designation. Fruit is selected for ripeness, cleanliness and bright natural acidity, since a no-added-preservative red depends on healthy, sound grapes rather than protective additions. Cool-climate-leaning sites are favoured to keep the variety's fragrant red-cherry and berry character and to avoid the heaviness that can make a light-handed Pinot clumsy, giving an approachable, contemporary style aimed at easy everyday drinking.

Vinification

The wine is made with minimal intervention and without added sulphur dioxide. Grapes are destemmed and given a gentle, cool fermentation with hand-plunging or soft pump-overs to draw out fragrance and supple tannin rather than heavy structure. Extraction is kept restrained to suit a light, juicy style. After a short maceration the wine is pressed off, and oak is used sparingly if at all, so primary fruit stays to the fore. Careful, hygienic handling protects the wine in the absence of preservative, and it is filtered and bottled early for fresh, vibrant drinking. The range is vegan-friendly.

About this Wine

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
