Tasting Notes

The 2023 Thierry Allemand Cornas Chaillots 'Cuvée C' is an exceptionally pure, finesse-driven Syrah. Sourced from the estate's younger vines on steep granitic slopes, this wine features a fragrant, vibrant bouquet of red and blue berries, violets, and subtle baking spices. The palate is silky, juicy, and well-rounded, delivering remarkable freshness and an elegant, mineral-tinged finish.
Crafted with traditional, hands-off techniques, the wine undergoes whole-cluster fermentation and gentle aging. The 2023 vintage is notably expressive and accessible in its youth, yet possesses enough underlying structure and crystalline fruit purity to evolve gracefully in the cellar for years to come.

Critic Scores

Notes of mulberries, violet and blueberry mingled with subtle carnal nuances preface the 2023 Cornas Les Chaillots, a medium- to full-bodied, dense and structured wine with a tensile, vibrant profile framed by velvety tannins, concluding with a long, ethereal, violet-inflected finish. Produced at a yield of 32 hectoliters per hectare—a healthy figure for the estate—it will require patience in the cellar.

Coming from younger vines and a mix of terroirs, the 2023 Cornas Chaillot reveals beautiful red and blue fruits, violets, and floral nuances. Medium to full-bodied and supple on the palate, it shows remarkable purity and a juicy, elegant character, with plenty of ripe tannins and a beautiful sense of finesse. This clearly outstanding Cornas shows the softer, finesse-driven style of the vintage and I suspect will shine right out of the gate yet also evolve gracefully.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Thierry Allemand is a benchmark grower of Cornas in the Northern Rhone, working around five hectares of steep granite terraces on the appellation's finest slopes. With no formal training and no family winemaking history, he built the domaine the hard way, labouring in others' cellars and buying land parcel by parcel. The Chaillot (Cuvee 'C') is drawn from younger vines and a mix of terroirs within Cornas, on decomposed-granite soils farmed organically with the meticulous, low-intervention care for which Allemand is known. The 2023 vintage was cropped at a healthy 32 hectolitres per hectare, a generous figure for the estate, in a season that produced a softer, more approachable style.

Vinification

In the Allemand manner, Syrah is hand-harvested from steep terraces and fermented with indigenous yeasts, traditionally with a significant proportion of whole clusters, in the domaine's small cellars. Maceration is gentle but thorough to build the wine's supple, medium- to full-bodied frame and velvety, ripe tannins. The Chaillot is raised in older oak rather than new barrels, preserving the pure red and blue fruit, violet and floral character that critics highlighted in the 2023, with sulphur kept to a minimum. Exact maceration length and elevage duration for the 2023 vintage are not confirmed and should be verified against the domaine or importer.

About this Wine

Shiraz

Bold and full-bodied, Shiraz delivers rich dark fruit flavours of blackberry, plum, and black cherry, layered with black pepper, clove, and subtle smoke. Firm tannins and a velvety texture give it real structure, often rounded out by notes of chocolate and vanilla from oak ageing. A versatile pairing partner for grilled meats and hearty dishes, it's one of Australia's most planted red varieties

Rhone Valley

The Rhône Valley is in the South of France and is situated in the Rhône river valley. The region has been growing wines for centuries and is generally split into two sub-regions. In the Northern Rhône, Syrah is the predominant grape variety, though it is often blended with other white varieties like Marsanne, Rousanne and Viognier, or the red grape Mourvedre. In the Southern Rhône, a wide range of white, red and rosés are produced alongside the undisputed king of the Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The Northern Rhône is cooler than the Southern Rhône and has a continental climate with warm summers and cold winter. The appellations from North to South are Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Château-Grillet, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, Cornas and Saint-Péray.

In Southern Rhône, the climate is more Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot summers. Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the most famous appellation but others include Côtes du Rhône, Gigondas and Lirac. Large pebbles are used in the region, placed at the base of the vines to absorb the suns heat during the day, to keep the vines warm at night.

Châteauneuf-du-Papes are blended from the 13 permitted grape varieties, though Grenache usually dominates, supported by Syrah and Mourvèdre. These wines can be supremely rich and complex and typically warrant 5-10 years in the cellar for best results.
