Critic Scores

Fine wines from Trediberri, most often delivered with a lighter touch. All La Morra, I believe, and unlike many from this great sub-zone, not ruined by influence of barrique. If only more would do the same. It’s still fine, red fruited and perfumed, but there’s an extra dimension of power and vitality in 2016. Cherry, new leather, liquorice root, mint and sage. Tannin is sure and has a graphite quality, and while there’s this cherry/plum candy succulence, it’s also pretty tense and tightly wound as a youngster. Acidity is fresh. Finish is long and clean, with brick dust tannin trailing. In short, the answer is yes.

The 2016 Barolo is a powerful, deep wine that is going to need time to soften and further open up. Black cherry, plum, spice, leather, dried herbs and menthol infuse the 2016 with notable aromatic depth as well as a palpable sense of brooding, virile intensity to match its classically built, mid-weight structure. This is an especially potent vintage for the straight Barolo, and there is clearly so much going on in the glass; it is a superb wine in the making. The Barolo is a blend of 80% Berri and 20% Rocche dell'Annunziata.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Trediberri is a small, historically rooted producer situated in Barolo's heart, with holdings in one or more of the denomination's prime crus. The 2016 vintage comes from their Nebbiolo parcels in Barolo's limestone-clay and sandstone soils, which impart the dark fruit and floral character the region is celebrated for. The producer maintains traditional methods aligned with Barolo's historic identity. The 2016 growing season was notable for moderate temperatures and carefully distributed rainfall, allowing Nebbiolo's notoriously late ripeness cycle to reach full phenolic maturity without excessive concentration. Trediberri's approach prioritises expression of the appellation and vintage over technical manipulation.

Vinification

Nebbiolo grapes were hand-harvested in autumn and destemmed, then fermented with indigenous yeasts in large wooden vessels under traditional Barolo protocols. Maceration extended over several weeks to extract the robust tannin structure and colour typical of the variety. The wine aged in large Slavonian oak casks (botti), the traditional vessel for Barolo, avoiding new French oak influence. Extended barrel ageing—likely three years or longer—built complexity and allowed gradual tannin polymerisation. Bottling occurred without fining or filtration in line with traditional Barolo practice, and the wine would have undergone further bottle development before release.

About this Wine

Nebbiolo

The noble red grape of Piedmont, Italy, behind Barolo and Barbaresco, known for its high tannin, acidity, and ageing potential.

Piedmont

Piedmont (Piemonte in Italian) is probably the finest wine region in all of Italy, and has laid claim to this since Roman times. It has a continental climate influenced by the surrounding Alps and Ligurian Apennines, and is located in the north-west of Italy, bordering both France and Switzerland.

Piedmont has only 1% of the total vineyards of Bordeaux and 15% that of Burgundy. So while a top Chateaux may produce upwards of 35,000 cases a year, leading Barolo producers will often make only 800 cases. More than half of its vineyards are registered with DOC designations and many are in the Apennine or Alpine foothills, from 300-600m above sea level. Most of the wines are produced by smaller family estates rather than larger holdings.

Piedmont has 46 different DOC and four DOCG regions, and produces the largest number of well known, world-recognized, prize-winning wines. The most famous would have to be Barolo or Barbaresco, whose power comes from the Nebbiolo grape variety. The most widely planted red variety is Barbera although Dolcetto, Muscat, Shiraz and Bonarda are also produced.

The white variety most well known is Moscato, which is often made into frizzante (bubbly) wines known as Asti. Cortese is made into the popular Gavi wines, and smaller amounts of Chardonnay and high quality Sparkling are also produced in the far north of Piedmont.
