Tasting Notes

WhistlePig 10 Year Old Straight Rye Whiskey 700ml
Straight Rye Whiskey - 100 Proof (50% ABV) - 10 Years Old | Shoreham, Vermont

A Decade of Daring and Distinction

In just over fifteen years since its founding in 2007, WhistlePig has emerged as a defining name in American rye whiskey. Although grain for this bottling is distilled in Canada, everything else - from aging to blending and bottling - happens on the Vermont farm. The 10 Year Old Straight Rye was the brand’s first major statement, released in the mid-2010s as one of the first 100-proof, decade-aged ryes - showing both ambition and confidence.

A full ten-year rest in new American oak gives this whiskey serious structure without softening rye’s signature fire. The nose leads with fragrant cinnamon sticks, candied orange peel, fresh dill, and toasted rye bread, softened by caramel and a note of mint. It's assertive yet nuanced.

On the palate, bold spice - clove, nutmeg, black pepper - takes centre stage before richness appears: creamy vanilla fudge, dark fruit, and charred oak. The mouthfeel is generous but well-balanced by dry, rye-driven elements.

The finish lingers with warm baking spice, toffee, and gently drying oak - leaving a compelling mix of power and polish.

A Defining Rye
When WhistlePig 10 debuted, decade-aged rye at 100 proof was virtually unheard of. It became an exemplar - ushering in a new standard for aged rye and inspiring countless peers. While newer WhistlePig expressions now feature estate-grown distillation, the 10 Year Old remains an authentic, masterfully curated classic that still thrills enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Final Thought
This is not a gateway whiskey - it’s a statement. WhistlePig 10 Year Old Straight Rye is bold, intricate, and refined - a modern rye that set the bar and still stands among the best.

Distillation & Provenance

Distillation

WhistlePig 10 Year Old is a 100% straight rye whiskey aged for a minimum of ten years and bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV). Rye whiskey in the United States must contain at least 51% rye in the mash bill and be aged in new charred oak barrels — WhistlePig's rye mash is 100%, producing the full, spicy, grain-forward character for which rye is known. The ten-year maturation at the Vermont farm develops considerable depth: cinnamon, black pepper, dried fruit, vanilla, and earthy rye grain with a long, warming finish. Bottled at 100 proof, the higher strength amplifies the spice and texture of the long-matured rye. The expression has won numerous awards and is widely credited with leading the modern American rye revival.

Provenance

WhistlePig is a rye whiskey brand and farm distillery located on a 500-acre estate in Shoreham, Vermont. The brand was founded in 2007 by entrepreneur Raj Bhakta on the historic farm property, with a mission to restore rye whiskey to its rightful place in American distilling. WhistlePig first built its reputation on exceptional sourced Canadian rye whiskey, before developing its own estate distillation programme using rye grain grown on the Vermont farm. The WhistlePig 10 Year, released in 2010, earned 96 points from Wine Enthusiast — the highest score the publication had given a rye whiskey — and is widely credited with helping lead the modern American rye revival.
