Tasting Notes

A single block of Shiraz planted in 1973; 8 acres at the western end of the Yarra Yering vineyard. Wine Making: Hand harvested, the bunches pass across a sorting table before processing either as whole bunches or whole berries. 50% of the block is fermented and matured in a 3500L upright oak cask containing 20% whole bunches and topped up for maturation with 100% whole bunch component. The remainder of fermentation in the Yarra Yering half-tonne open-fermenters, gently hand plunged twice daily. Air bag pressed to release the last fermenting juice from the many whole berries that remain. The wine then aged for 12 months; 50% in the 3500L two-year- old cask and 50% to French oak puncheons (500L); 10% new oak. Perfumed cool climate Shiraz; deliciously medium bodied with a lick of aniseed spice. Vibrant blue and black plum fruits bring a fresh energy to the palate along with some liquorice spice layering in structure and complexity. As always from this block we see some cured meat and a smoke-char interest driving the back palate. Medium weighted and driven by fruit purity, oak just a faint background seasoning and a bite of stalk grip interest.

Critic Scores

97 Points – Philip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion 2027 From a shiraz vineyard planted in '73 adjacent to Yarra Yering. 10% whole bunches and matured mainly in large format oak (15% new). A deep, bright crimson. A brooding version of this bona fide Yarra classic. Aromas of boysenberry, blackcurrant, black pepper and lifted spice. On the palate this is compact and tightly coiled, just waiting to release its energy. A very good wine in the making that will clearly reward up to 15 years, if not longer, in the cellar.

96 Points – Stuart Knox, The Real Review. Deep ruby red with distinct purple at the rim. Mulberry, blood plum, iodine and black pepper aromas. Complex and balanced, ripe purple berry fruit forms the base with layers of iodine, fresh ground pepper, clove and cinnamon bark. Fine gravel tannins sit harmoniously, carrying to a very long, structured and drying finish. Demands revisiting.

Medium deep crimson. Lifted raspberry, dark plum, touch crème de cassis aromas with some praline notes. Smooth and velvety with ample raspberry, dark plum, pure blackcurrant, hint elderberry fruits, fine loose knit chalky/ graphite textures, lovely inky volume and underlying roasted walnut notes. Builds grippy/ slinky at the finish with the lovely persistency of fruit. Delicious drinking but should further develop. 13.5% alc

About this Wine

Shiraz

Bold and full-bodied, Shiraz delivers rich dark fruit flavours of blackberry, plum, and black cherry, layered with black pepper, clove, and subtle smoke. Firm tannins and a velvety texture give it real structure, often rounded out by notes of chocolate and vanilla from oak ageing. A versatile pairing partner for grilled meats and hearty dishes, it's one of Australia's most planted red varieties

Victoria

The wine region of Victoria has the highest number of grape vines than any other state in Australia. It is home to over 600 wineries and well known regions such as Yarra valley, Heathcote, and Rutherglen. Victoria is situated in the southeastern corner of Australia where due to the location, the climate has a cool maritime influence and is known for their outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, along with producing Australia’s most famed dessert Muscat and Topaque wines.

There are a number of different terroir levels throughout the wine region of Victoria which leads to the production of different ranges of wines. In the southern region of Victoria, the vines are regulated by the cool winds of the Bass Strait. Central Victoria consists of mostly flat terrain that tends to be drier and warmer than the rest of Victoria, which results in more fruit concentrated wines. It may be surprising to note that Victoria is the third most productive wine region in Australia, seeing as it does not have as many areas suitable for viticulture, which has resulted in the cellar door culture of Victoria being concentrated with smaller, but more personal boutique wineries.
