Tasting Notes

This particular wine is the first of the Bouland cuvées focusing on Corcelette's pure, sandy, granitic soils, which gives wines of great perfume and finer, rounder tannins than those of Corcelette's schist influenced terroirs. Although the name does not say so, this is truly a Vieilles Vignes cuvée. It has always been a 50-60 year old vineyard that has supplied the bulk of the fruit, as it is for this wine, and there are now two additional parcels of 80-year old bush vines. Partly aged in tank and partly in 2,000 litre foudre.

Critic Scores

One cuvée that really doesn’t miss a beat in this more challenging vintage is the 2021 Morgon Corcelette Vieilles Vignes Sable, a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy wine evocative of plums, sweet berries, spices and forest floor. Layered and concentrated, with an enveloping core of fruit and melting tannins, it will delight readers nostalgic for more classically proportioned Beaujolais.

Vineyard Cultivation

Daniel Bouland maintains traditional Morgon vineyards in France's prestigious Beaujolais cru, renowned for Gamay production on slate and granite soils. The Corcelette lieu-dit sits at mid-elevation with optimal sun exposure and natural drainage. Vines referred to as vieilles vignes (old vines) are typically 40+ years old, producing lower yields but concentrated, complex fruit. The 2021 Beaujolais vintage was characterized by restrained ripeness and elegant fruit, with moderate alcohol development and excellent natural acidity preserved through the growing season, ideal for Gamay's food-friendly character and age-worthiness.

Vinification

Whole bunches were destemmed and fermented using the traditional Beaujolais approach: cool fermentation in open vats with extended skin contact lasting 10-14 days to build colour and extract fine tannins without excessive phenolic harshness. The wine underwent natural malolactic fermentation, which reduced acidity slightly and developed savoury complexity. Brief aging in neutral vessels (not new oak) allowed the wine to settle and clarify before bottling, preserving Gamay's bright cherry fruit and peppery minerality.

About this Wine

Gamay

A light, fruity red grape best known as the sole grape of Beaujolais, typically producing fresh, low-tannin wines.

Beaujolais

Located just south of Burgundy, the French wine region of Beaujolais covers an impressive area of 22,000 hectares between Mâcon and Lyon. Although this wine region was famous for being associated with dull, diluted wine in the past, its reputation has since only improved, proving their worth to wine lovers all over the world with their endless variety of wines, ranging from fresh and light to refined and lush wines. 98 percent of the vineyards here are made up of the famous Gamay grapes, with the exception of a small amount of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir which are used to make white wines. Gamay grapes are known to make luscious red wines that have a light to medium body, moderate tannin, relatively low acidity and contain aromas of berries such as raspberry, tart cherry and cranberry. The region of Beaujolais is home to ten named village Crus: St Amour, Juliénas, Moulin-à-Vent, Chénas, Fleurie, Chiroubles, Morgon, Régnié (a Cru since 1988), Brouilly and Côte de Brouilly. When compared to most other Beaujolais wines, the Crus of this region are more concentrated and have much more character and can be kept for up to ten years.

Beaujolais is blessed with a temperate climate and shares its summer weather with the Mediterranean Sea due to its close proximity, but the location is also interior enough to experience cold dry weather from the Northeast. The soil of Beaujolais is an important component in defining the different styles of wines in the region. Towards the south of the town of Villefrance, the soil is made up of sandstone or clay and limestone. In the north, the soils are comprised of granite or crystalline rock on the upper slopes, and in the lower slopes they are made up of stone and clay soils.
