Tasting Notes

The Syrah comes from the Sexton and Tarraford Vineyards, the Carignan and the Grenache are grown at the Tarraford Vineyard.
The Syrah is predominantly the Red Dog 67 clone that we have propagated from our original block 2 vines – that clone is unique to Tarraford and carries a special perfume.
Each variety and parcel is fermented separately in small open vats with varying degrees of whole bunch and whole berry fermentation, before being matured in large and small oak for 18 months.
The final blend was completed in the Spring of 2020 and left in tank to settle and come together until bottling just before Christmas, by gravity, no fining, no filtration.
This blend is inspired by the band of fresh delicious early drinking reds being produced in the cool regions of Australia.

Critic Scores

Second vintage release of Giant Steps Light Dry Red. It’s a 51/40% blend of the two varieties. The 2017 was a ripper.

This 2018 goes straight into the smashable zone. It’s fresh, perfumed and vibrant. ‘Energetic’ is the aim and energetic is the outcome. Florals, fruits, light/sweet spices. File it under Not A Care In The World. It’s the kind of wine we all need more of in our lives.

About this Wine

Red Blends

A category covering red wines made from a blend of multiple grape varieties.

Victoria

The wine region of Victoria has the highest number of grape vines than any other state in Australia. It is home to over 600 wineries and well known regions such as Yarra valley, Heathcote, and Rutherglen. Victoria is situated in the southeastern corner of Australia where due to the location, the climate has a cool maritime influence and is known for their outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, along with producing Australia’s most famed dessert Muscat and Topaque wines.

There are a number of different terroir levels throughout the wine region of Victoria which leads to the production of different ranges of wines. In the southern region of Victoria, the vines are regulated by the cool winds of the Bass Strait. Central Victoria consists of mostly flat terrain that tends to be drier and warmer than the rest of Victoria, which results in more fruit concentrated wines. It may be surprising to note that Victoria is the third most productive wine region in Australia, seeing as it does not have as many areas suitable for viticulture, which has resulted in the cellar door culture of Victoria being concentrated with smaller, but more personal boutique wineries.
